Starfleet Academy showrunner confirms season 2 character exit

Alex Kurtzman has made it clear that one key figure won't be coming back. Yet.

Everyone has known for quite a while that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy wouldn't be a one-and-done affair. Season 2 was given the go-ahead over a year before Season 1 premiered. It even wrapped production before the season 1 finale dropped. So, even though there are now no more Star Trek shows currently in active production, there is still another full run of Starfleet Academy to come. In likelihood, it'll be around this time next year.

Still, there's very little available information about where season 2 will pick up after Starfleet Academy's passable season 1 finale. That doesn't mean there's no information, though. Co-showrunner and modern-era Star Trek overlord Alex Kurtzman has revealed at least one key detail about what to expect when Starfleet Academy returns. Depending on how you look at it, it's not good news. But it could end up turning around down the line.

SPOILERS for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1, Episode 10, "Rubincon."

Paul Giamatti is officially not returning as Nus Braka in Starfleet Academy season 2

I'm fully aware that Starfleet Academy isn't a universal hit with Star Trek fans. I certainly don't think it's perfect, but there was still plenty to enjoy as a seasoned Trekkie. However, even ignoring the slew of references and sequels to classic-era storylines, Paul Giamatti's performances as Nus Braka unquestionably stood out for all the right reasons. He appeared in just 3 episodes in total in season 1, but he took full command of all the scenes in which he featured.

Sadly, Kurtzman confirmed to TVInsider that Giamatti is "not in season 2." Considering Braka ended up in Federation custody at the end of season 1, it's not a huge surprise that he won't be coming back when Starfleet Academy returns. The finale essentially completed the arc of Giamatti's character, so a new villain is expected to replace the Klingon/Tellerite hybrid as the story's overarching antagonist. With almost every member of the season 1 cast expected to come back in season 2, this makes Giamatti something of an outlier.

Don't rule out a Nus Braka comeback just yet

When Kurtzman announced Giamatti's absence from Starfleet Academy season 2's cast, he added a couple of qualifiers to the statement. "There’s nothing we want more than to bring Paul back," Kurtzman said, "and there’s nothing Paul wants more than to come back, so we are going to figure that out in Season 3."

Season 3 has yet to be confirmed, and it may depend on how well season 2 performs next year. Other than Strange New Worlds seasons 4 and 5, and Starfleet Academy season 2, there are no more Star Trek episodes banked at the moment. This hasn't been the case since the franchise returned in 2017 with Discovery. That being said, I'm confident saying that Star Trek probably isn't done. Production should resume at some point.

If and when it does, it sounds very much like Giamatti will reprise his role as Nus Braka, despite missing all of season 2. I'm not sure how necessary such a comeback would be from a storytelling perspective, but it would still be great to have a character as underutilized as Nus Braka thrust back into the action in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's potential future.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1 is streaming now on Paramount+. Season 2 has wrapped, and is expected to land in early 2027.
