Stellar new Mandalorian and Grogu trailer once more proves Ahsoka wrong (for now)

Could her advice eventually turn out to be relevant?

Rosario Dawson's Ahsoka Tano once made a bold statement about Grogu that made perfect sense, but as time has gone by, the former Jedi's appraisal of the adorable green being has turned out to be incorrect. The new trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu definitely reinforces the idea that Ahsoka was wrong, but it also doesn't completely rule out the fact that she may ultimately be proven correct.

Ahsoka was initially a co-creation of both Star Wars creator George Lucas and the current Lucasfilm president Dave Filoni. However, Filoni has been at the helm for all of Ahsoka's character development through the years, including the supervision of her jump from animated Star Wars shows into live-action projects. It's still not yet confirmed whether she will have a cameo in the upcoming movie, but it wouldn't be completely wild if she did, given her history with both main characters.

What Ahsoka said about Grogu when they met in The Mandalorian

Ahsoka and Grogu have only crossed paths a few times so far. They first met in The Mandalorian season 2, Episode 5, "The Jedi," when Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) took his surrogate son to Ahsoka when he started to display Force sensitivity. Pascal's character thought it best that Grogu be trained as a Jedi so that his powers didn't spiral out of control. Surprisingly, despite the shortage of light side Force users at the time, Ahsoka said it would be more prudent to "let his abilities fade."

She cited Grogu's attachment to Din as the reason why, explaining that such emotions can lead Force users down a dark path. Clearly referencing her former master, Hayden Christensen's Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka said: "I’ve seen what such feelings can do to a fully trained Jedi Knight." She went on to confirm that she would not "start this child down that path," which is when she advised Din not to have Grogu trained in the way of the Force, but to just wait and let his powers disappear.

The Mandalorian and Grogu's latest trailer proves Grogu's Force powers still haven't gone anywhere

While Grogu doesn't look like the most fearsome warrior in the galaxy — quite the opposite is true — he has proven himself again and again when it comes to being a naturally gifted Force user. Rather than his powers fading as Ahsoka predicted, Grogu appears to be finding new ways of wielding the Force as time goes by. His most impressive feat in the new trailer shows him crushing a droid with a wave of his little hand, and I'm sure there will be even more significant Force-based accomplishments in the upcoming movie.

Granted, The Book of Boba Fett did reveal that Grogu received at least some training from Luke Skywalker after the events of The Mandalorian season 2. Still, said training was incredibly brief, and was stymied by Grogu's quiet desire to return to his father. So, although Grogu's time with Like probably did delay any apparent dwindling of his Force-based abilities, The Mandalorian & Grogu has already proven he's becoming more attuned to the Force, not more distant from it.

Din Djarin just revealed an event that could ultimately prove Ahsoka right

Pascal's character largely defines himself by his cultural Mandalorian heritage, but biologically, he's human, just like most other members of his religion. So, he probably has just a few more decades left to live, whereas Din Djarin's voiceover in the trailer explains that Grogu's species lives for centuries. So, in all likelihood, Grogu will be left to fend for himself when his father passes on. Hopefully, Grogu will be prepared do just that when the time comes, but such a huge event could be worrying.

Even though Grogu isn't being trained as a Jedi, he is constantly required to use his Force powers to help himself and Din Djarin survive and complete their various objectives. This probably accounts for why his mystical abilities refuse to atrophy, as Ahsoka suggested would happen without training. If Grogu's powers continue to be active without being given the discipline and training to keep them in check, the eventual death of Din Djarin could easily send Grogu down a dark path of mourning and revenge.

Just as Anakin fully embraced the Dark Side in an attempt to save the one he loved, Grogu may experience a similar arc just before or after Din dies — regardless of the context of said death. If so, then constantly putting Grogu in situations that keep his connection to the Force at full strength could prove to be a really poor set of decisions. So, even though Ahsoka's concerns about Grogu haven't yet been proven valid, there is still time for them to be terrifyingly relevant.

The Mandalorian and Grogu hits cinema screens on May 22, 2026.
