The hugely anticipated fifth and final season of Netflix's Stranger Things is out later this year, wrapping up almost a decade of action and adventure. The season promises to be one of the biggest TV events of 2025. Beyond that, creators Matt and Ross Duffer are already seeking to expand their horizons. One of their planned future projects is another supernatural series, but this time set in a retirement home.
The series in question is called The Boroughs, which despite following elderly characters still has a similar core concept to Stranger Things. It's still about a group of unlikely heroes fighting an otherworldly enemy. Another series they're working on is called Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, another show that again harkens back to Stranger Things. They're sticking to the supernatural genre.
Speaking during a Netflix presentation, CNN, Matt Duffer explained that their two upcoming shows “encompass what we feel is at the core of Stranger Things. They’re stories about ordinary people who encounter the extraordinary.”
Of the two series they're developing, however, it's The Boroughs that feels the most like Stranger Things. “Only unlike Stranger Things, it’s set in a retirement community, so that’s something different,” Matt Duffer explained. “This time our misfits are a little on the older side. They ride golf carts, not bikes."
The duo have already enticed a few big names to star in The Boroughs, including Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard and Bill Pullman. The series is still early in development. I'd expect to see news ramp up once Stranger Things concludes later this year.
Stranger Things creators are "deeply involved" in spinoffs
The Duffers won't be stepping away from the Stranger Things universe, either; spinoff projects are very likely. “There are more Stranger Things stories to tell and in the works. It’s a bit early at this point to talk about them, but we’re deeply involved in every one,” Matt Duffer teased.
"It’s very important to us that anything with the Stranger Things name on it is of the highest quality and not repetitive, that it has a reason to exist and always blazes its own path. And also, it needs to basically just be awesome — or we need to think it’s awesome. And there are a lot of what we think are awesome things in the pipeline."
Netflix has not set a release date for the final season of Stranger Things, but expect it later in the year. How do you think the series will end? Spill your theories in the comments below!
