DC Studios has dropped the first trailer for Superman, a new movie about the world's most famous superhero. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is behind the camera, Nicholas Hoult is the villainous Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan will bring the fast-energy energy she showed off on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to the role of Lois Lane, and relative unknown David Corenswet will play Superman himself. Watch the trailer below:
My first reaction is: I like it! James Gunn always brings a sense of humor and lightness to his movies, even as they dig into serious themes. That's still true here. Whether as Clark Kent or Superman, David Corenswet seems to be playing a somewhat normal guy who also happens to be a being of infinite power. Also he has a dog and the dog has a cape and I like that.
I also like the conflict. So Superman is using his powers to stop war, and rather than being praised, there's a contingent of people who hate him for it. With the way narratives are spun in our own world, I can completely believe that.
Lore-wise, I have some questions. When Lois Lane talks about "the president," the camera shows us Lex Luthor. Does that mean Lex is the president in this continuity? It's happened often enough in the comics, so it would check out. I'm also intrigued by Lois and Clark's little mock interview at the top of the trailer. She's interviewing him "as Superman." But does she already know his secret identity, or is he play-acting for her to help her out?
We also see a couple of other superheroes, including a Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion) and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced). Will the movie be overstuffed? Right now, I'm more exicted than nervous. Superman hits theaters on July 11.
Watch the trailer for Marvel's Ironheart
As long as we're talking about superhero trailers, Marvel just released one for Ironheart, a new TV show revolving around Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), a young inventor audiences met in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She's a big Iron Man who makes her own Iron Man-like flying mechanical suit. Now she's getting her own show: Ironheart. Watch above!
Marvel has been pretty hit or miss over the past few years, so time will tell how this series fares. Ironheart premieres on Disney+ on June 24.
