Judge Dredd is a judge, jury and executioner all in one, meting out violent justice in a future dystopia. He proved very popular when writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra first created him in comic book form in the late 1970s. He's appeared on the big screen a couple times since, in a 1995 movie where he was played by Sylvester Stallone and a 2012 film where he was played by Karl Urban. Generally speaking, the Stallone movie is remembered as a cheesy misfire and the Urban version an under-appreciated gem.
Third time's the charm? Taika Waititi, the director behind movies like Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit, is teaming up with writer Drew Pearce for another Judge Dredd movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Nothing's finalized yet — we don't know who would star — but I can see Waititi's gonzo sensibilities fitting a story like this well. The pair are reportedly leaning into the satirical and black comedy aspects of the story, which sounds like a smart move.
No one asked, but my pitch would be to bring back Karl Urban. Like Waititi, he has a healthy appreciation for irony, and he can still do action. Don't believe me? Just check him out as aging action star Johnny Cage in the new trailer for Mortal Kombat II:
Mortal Kombat is another franchise that has to balance extreme, gratuitous action with a winking self-awareness, and it looks like this new movie will do it well. The last Mortal Kombat movie came out in 2021 and centered around an original character named Cole Young (Lewis Tan) not found anywhere in the video game franchise, which was a curious choice. The new movie looks like it centers Johnny Cage, and with Karl Urban playing him, I'm already more interested.
Urban will also return as Billy Butcher in the fifth and final season of The Boys next year. I'll admit I was a little thrown when watching that trailer and hearing him speak without his New Zealand accent. In any case, Mortal Kombat II will come out on October 24. As for Judge Dredd, we'll keep a watch.
