The 15 best fantasy/sci-fi shows of 2024, ranked worst to best!
By Dan Selcke
Every Wednesday, we here at WinterIsComing.net get together on the Take the Black podcast to talk through the latest news from the worlds of sci-fi, fantasy, movies, TV and books. And on one Wednesday per year, we devote that hour to looking at the 15 biggest genre TV shows to come out over the past 12 months and rank them from worst to best, "worst" and "best" obviously being relative terms.
"We" usually means myself and WiC editor Daniel Roman, by the way. We limit our catalog of of shows to 15 because we don't have all the time in the world. That means some sci-fi/fantasy TV series only get honorable mentions, and we give our reasons why they didn't make the list proper. Watch us sort through our chosen 15 shows above, and check out our finished list below:
- Shōgun
- Arcane
- Interview With The Vampire season 2
- The Penguin
- Fallout
- 3 Body Problem
- The Boys season 4
- Silo
- Agatha All Along
- House of the Dragon season 2
- Dune: Prophecy
- The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live
- What We Do In The Shadows season 6
- The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2
- Avatar: The Last Airbender
Each year, Daniel and I go back and forth over what shows to put where, and sometimes compromises and sacrifices must occur. For instance, I have yet to see Arcane, but Daniel is in love with it, so I knew it was going to be high up the list. By the same token, Daniel hasn't seen Interview With The Vampire, but I think it's one of the best shows currently running, so I'll be damned if it didn't place very highly.
All told, this year's discussions resulted in some placements I still feel weird about. In my heart, I feel like I want Dune: Prophecy to be higher on the list, and even though I enjoyed 3 Body Problem I'm surprised it placed so high. But that's the kind of unpredictability you get when you make a list by committee!
What do you think of the list? Did we nail it dead on? Did we get it completely wrong? Any shows in particular you would move up or down? Let us know, and feel free to watch the live Take the Black shows every Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. CST on the WinterIsComing YouTube and Facebook pages! We'd love to interact with y'all live.
