While the first episode slowly introduced us to the world of The Boroughs, the ending made sure that we were hooked. After making some friends and agreeing to stay in the community, Sam walks into his friend Jack's house to find something he isn't expecting: A terrifying creature from another world seemingly devouring his new pal. He knew something was up, but not that.

The Boroughs season 1 episode 2 begins with Sam being checked out by paramedics as Jack's body is taken out in a bodybag. The paramedics blame Jack's death on his sleep apnea, but Sam know that's not the truth and tries to explain the "thing" that killed him, but he's not believed. Wally, Renee, Art, and Judy watch as Jack's body is loaded into an ambulance. Secretly, Hank's in a car watching.

Sam has more memories of his final day with Lilly. He finds a puzzle piece in her hair and she begins to glitch like she's a hologram. Her face opens up as if the creature will emerge. He's awoken by the nightmare, and Claire calls to check in on him after Edward's break-in. She's worried about him, especially after she hears him tapping and saying there's an owl in the walls.

Edward tells Sam where to find the key

Art rushes out for golf, and it's clear Judy's taking Jack's death rather hard. But instead of going to the golf course, Art leaves The Boroughs. Renee seems to be making some headway on finding her missing quartz as a woman in her pilates class is also missing quartz chess pieces. Paz agrees to file a report so long as Renee agrees to go on a date with him. Wally tries to persuade his doctor to pursue alternative means to treat his cancer.

Sam meets with Edward to ask him about the owl in the walls, but his condition prevents him from having the same conversation as Sam. To meet Edward where he is, Sam pretends to be Edward's son Joey, which allows Edward to answer about the "owl." He caught one and locked it up, but Sam needs the key in the light. Blaine watches their interaction from overhead. Art drives out to a rundown house where he talks to a crow named Brooksy and tends to his mushrooms.

While talking to the bird, Art reveals that he knew Judy was sleeping with Jack. Back at The Boroughs, Judy goes for a swim and goes through the motions for the rest of her day. She goes to Jack's house and lies down on his bed while holding one of his shirts. Meanwhile, Renee accompanies Wally to shop for a casket. He's tired of trying to outrun his cancer.

In Jack's house, Judy finds a hammer on the ground with suspicion. She heads to Sam's to invite him to Jack's memorial and ask about what happened when he died. She also returns his hammer to him and admits to breaking in before he found him. Clearly, Judy's wondering if Sam had something to do with Jack's death. Back in his house, he unscrews light fixtures looking for the key.

The creature's blood turns into a miracle

Hank finds the so-called quartz thief after Paz filed a police report, but he's disappointed that they won't be able to get their things back. Paz meets with Renee to inform her that Hank's findings were a sham. They plan to catch the thief themselves in order to score that dinner date. Sam's still tearing apart his house searching for clues and keys. He didn't find anything in the sconces, but he does find a key in the light fixture on his bathroom mirror.

Out in the desert, Art hears a strange noise, which makes Brooksy fly all over the place. When he flies outside the roof, he falls back down to the ground, dead. Art looks up and sees a swarm of birds flying in an odd pattern before each and every one of them falls to the ground to their death. Sam heads out to a storage unit with Edward's key. He finds all kinds of knick knacks and a locked chest. After breaking the lock, he opens the lid and sees an owl.

When he returns home with the owl, he's met with Kayleigh. Back in his house, he watches TV but gets distracted by a blue light coming from his kitchen. Blaine speaks at Jack's memorial, and Judy's annoyed that her friends continue to talk throughout the service. Sam bursts insisting to speak with Wally. Outside, Judy confides in Anneliese about how she's feeling, and she gets the advice to "put it all out there in the desert." Whatever that means.

Art researches what happened to the crows and missed Jack's memorial. Judy's not having his explanation about the "divine." She heads outside to their backyard and takes Anneliese's advice. Wally comes back to Sam's house to show him the blue blood of the creature that killed Jack. On the spoon, in front of the television, the blood turns into a blue pigment before burst into what looks like something from outer space. Wally calls what they've encountered a miracle.
