Going into the halfway point of The Boroughs season 1, Sam and Wally are beginning to slowly piece together what happened to Jack and the creature that's seemingly terrorizing their community. In the previous episode, the pair found a new ally in Judy as they discovered the creature fed on Jack's brain, just as the creature found a new target in Renee. Art also found magical fruit. So there's that!

The Boroughs season 1 episode 4 picks up with Art entering a gas station convenience store and when the cashier speaks to him, his hearing aids glitch. Since eating the magic fruit, his appearance has changed. In the middle of paying for items, an armed robbery takes place and Art decides to fight off the robber with his newfound strength.

Back at The Boroughs, Sam meets with Blaine after being detained for the funeral home break-in. Blaine questions him about the "thing" he claimed killed Jack and questions his odd behavior. Sam admits to looking for proof that something killed Jack, and Blaine suggests checking into The Manor given his erratic mental state. Sam remains firm, even as Blaine tells a very gaslight-y story.

Sam, Wally, and Judy plan a trap for the creature

Even with behavior, Blaine still allows Sam to leave. But his parting words are about Edward's sudden passing, something that doesn't sit right with Sam. Something sketchy's definitely going on. Renee wakes up in the morning with a tickle in her throat (from the creature!) and pushes away Paz's attempts to make plane together later. He's hurt by her not wanting to keep dating.

Sam returns home to catch up with Judy and Wally, but he's insistent that they can't go to the cops or tell anyone else. Blaine told him in so many words that anyone who knows the truth is in danger. He knows that Edward's death happened at the hands of Blaine, and Sam's new plan is to kill Blaine. That might be a little extreme but Judy and Wally are with him every step of the way.

Art returns to The Boroughs in a great mood having been revived by his magic fruit. Meanwhile, Wally has a new theory about the creature. He believes it's drinking their cerebrospinal fluid, which in the long term could cause neurological disorders in the residents. Wally believes if he could get a sample of this fluid, he could use it as bait to catch the creature. Of course, Wally extracts the brain fluid from Sam.

Paz runs interference between two residents arguing about an issue with dogs, and when Hank yells at the residents, Blaine steps in to reprimand Hank. He takes Hank downstairs for an ominous meeting. Renee sents Wally an "SOS" message, which terrifies him, but it's just her issues with Paz. He pushes her to pursue something with in spite of her reservations.

Back at home, Art finds Jack's shirt in their closet and realizes what happened with Judy. Speaking of Judy, she and Sam drove to Claire's house to pick up some of his old television sets to use to catch the creature. Sam opens up to Judy about feeling Lilly's presence at The Boroughs and seeing her pop up as if she were real and warning him. Claire catches them and is mad he hasn't called her back.

Renee learns about Hank's strange past as he attacks Paz

While making a hotel reservation for her and Paz, Renee spots Hank on the security footage at the community center. She takes a photo of him and runs it through an app, which comes up with a result for a newspaper headline from 1975: "Prison warden dead in fiery accident." Hank's photo is included with the name Milton Hauser. Another mystery has just started to unfold.

Anneliese strikes up a conversation with Art at the bar, and they share a laugh over a drink. Sam and Judy return to help set up the trap for the creature. Renee pays a visit to Tim Hauser to ask about his father Milton, and Tim assumes that she's another one of his long lost children. She learns details about Milton's past and while looking through a photo album, she spots Milton with a man who looks a lot like Blaine.

When Art vents about Judy, Anneliese suggests punishing her. Suddenly, he begins to have a physical reaction and rushes to the bathroom. After throwing up, his appearance has changed back to how it was, leading him to try to turn back the clock with on last bite. But he keeps reacting until he collapses. Anneliese enters the bathroom and stands over him as he pleads for help.

In the police department, Paz finds a box of quartz and sneaks downstairs until he finds a closed door where Hank appears to be talking to someone. Paz's phone rings, but he hides before Hank can catch him. Paz enters the room Hank left from and he's shocked at what he sees, which we don't see. Hank appears behind him and shocks him in the neck.

Sam and Wally begin their plan as Judy tracks the creature with a gun. Wally spots the creature approaching them and turns on the TVs, but they don't turn on and their plan has been foiled. Judy shoots at the creature and they follow the trail of its blue gooey blood into the kitchen and through the over where it has escaped back where it came from.
