After a mixed debut season on Disney+, the second season of Russell T Davies' rebooted Doctor Who series has been terrific so far. With a fresh blend of whacky and whimsical tales alongside darker and grittier stories, the balance has been brilliant.
As fans prepare for the season 2 finale, "The Reality War," the official Doctor Who page has announced that the episode will air for everyone everywhere simultaniously. Typically, the BBC releases new episodes to audiences in the U.K. first, and then they air on Disney+ for everyone else shortly thereafter. Come May 31, the season 2 finale will air on BBC One's primetime evening slot like usual, and will also drop on streamer BBC iPlayer at the same time. In addition, it'll also be viewable in 450 movie theatres across the U.K. and Ireland. It will not air earlier at 8:00 a.m. on BBC iPlayer in the U.K., as was the case for previous episodes. The simultaneous viewing works for fans in the US, too. Dates and times for international viewers to tune in are still to be announced. The simultaneous viewing works for fans in the US, too. Showrunner Russell T Davies teased the finale in very dramatic terms: “The Doctor is doomed, Belinda is lost, Ruby is trapped, UNIT is powerless, the Unholy Trinity rule supreme and the Underverse is rising," he said. "And now we can all experience this devastating climax together, all at the same time, with a unique worldwide premiere. I can promise shocks, scares and revelations off the scale. Come and have fun!”
Given the secrecy of the finale and how both the BBC and Disney are taking precautions to make it a big TV event, some fans are worried that it'll be Ncuti Gatwa's final episode as the Fourteenth Doctor. Of course, every few seasons, the character regenerates and another actor takes on the role. Right now, there's no concrete evidence that the Doctor will regenerate, but it's worth bearing in mind!
The Doctor Who season 2 finale, "The Reality War," premieres May 31st on BBC One and Disney+! And there are still a few episodes to enjoy between then and now. New episodes drop on Saturdays.
