The Expanse is getting an Amos Burton sequel comic that will be a "noir revenge thriller"

The Expanse: A Little Death comic series will continue to fill in the 30-year period between the sixth and seventh book of James S.A. Corey's sci-fi series.

The Expanse television show may be over, but the series is still going strong in other mediums. In 2023, a Kickstarted launched to support a new comic called The Expanse: Dragon Tooth, which continued the story after season 6. It absolutely crushed its funding goal, because obviously fans want more of The Expanse in whatever medium we can get it. This month, the story continues, because The Expanse creators along with BOOM! Studios launched yet another comic book Kickstarter which funded in a matter of hours. This one is titled The Expanse: A Little Death, and it's all about everyone's favorite space badass Amos Burton.

As of this writing, The Expanse: A Little Death Kickstarter is in its final three days and has wracked up over $793,000 with 7,155 backers. The people have made their desire clear.

A Little Death is a limited run comic which will run for four issues. Intriguingly, Amos actor Wes Chatham is one of the co-writers for the series, along with Dragon Tooth writer Andy Diggle. Who better to help us get inside Amos' head?

Recently, Diggle stopped by the Ty & That Guy podcast, which is Chatham and Expanse creator Ty Franck's chat show where they talk all about various sci-fi shows and movies. This time around, the conversation was all about A Little Death (via Screen Rant).

"A Little Death is an Amos story," Diggle explained. "Rather than having everybody in everything all the time, what if we focus on Amos? The fact that Wes is behind the story and happens to play Amos, it's entirely coincidental that he's the main character in the story... I'll happily take the credit for it when it comes out, unless the end product sucks [Laughs]. In which case it's all your fault."

Diggle and Chatham also got into some specific references for the comic, including Denzel Washington's 2004 revenge film Man on Fire. "Man on Fire is something you keep coming back to, I've noticed. In terms of the tone and the vibe. That's what I'm really responding to: a sort of dark, noir, hardcore, crime thriller," Diggle said.

"One of the things I really like about The Expanse is you play with genres... the show is more tonally even, but in the novels there's a bit of, 'this is noir, and then that's kind of a western on Ilus, and this is space horror.' You can play around with the different subgenres, and I think there is room to do that in the comics, too. So it's not exactly a revenge thriller, but it has that kind of vibe to it. A noir revenge thriller. And just letting Amos go 'full Amos.' I describe it as 'Churn Mode.' But it has to be about something."

"Churn Mode" is an interesting descriptor; Expanse authors James S.A. Corey (Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham) have written a number of novellas set in The Expanse world over the years, and one of those is an Amos-focused story called "The Churn." That story explored Amos' past when he was still a young man stuck in the violent criminal underworld of Baltimore. Some of that material was referenced in The Expanse, but we've never seen Amos back in true 'Churn Mode.' That makes me both excited and very nervous for anyone who crosses Amos' path.

Here's the official description for A Little Death:

"Following the fallout of THE EXPANSE: DRAGON TOOTH, the Rocinante crew is plunged into a high stakes conspiracy when an old acquaintance of Amos Burton’s comes to him for aid. Set in the same 30 year period between Babylon's Ashes (Book 6) and Persepolis Rising (Book 7) and after the conclusion of The Expanse Season 6, THE EXPANSE: A LITTLE DEATH continues the story with four epic new comics, available in single issue or graphic novel format."

The Expanse: A Little Death is being created in close coordination with Corey and Alcon Television Group, the studio behind the hit television series. It's been wonderful to see The Expanse branch off into different mediums following the end of the show and books. If you're looking to continue that tale with Amos, there are still a couple of days left to hop aboard the Kickstarter.
