Netflix is celebrating the start of production on The Gentlemen season 3 with a huge casting announcement. The series is bringing together two Lord of the Rings stars in an unexpected reunion — Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom. Both are brand new to the series this season, along with fellow newcomer Robert Carlyle. At the same time, The Gentlemen is losing Daniel Ings and Giancarlo Esposito, both of whom have been in the series from the beginning. It's a bittersweet change for fans of The Gentlemen, but it may help draw some new viewers into the series — especially fantasy aficionados. This will be Wood and Bloom's first time working with showrunner Guy Ritchie, who also wrote and directed the original Gentlemen movie back in 2019.
The Gentlemen is a crime drama and a dark comedy about British nobles embroiled in the drug industry and organized crime. It shares a setting and some thematic similarities with the 2019 movie, but it follows a different cast of characters in their own story. The show centers around Eddie Horniman (Theo James), the younger son of the Duke of Halstead, who unexpected inherits the dukedom upon his father's death. He then discovers that his father was secretly growing mass quantities of cannabis on the estate, and had other criminal interests that unfold over time.

The Gentlemen season 3 needs stars like Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom
So far, we don't know anything about the new characters played by Wood, Bloom, and Carlyle, but it's safe to say there are some big voids to fill in the cast. Ings played Eddie's irresponsible older brother, Freddy, while Esposito played an American billionaire seeking to purchase the estate out from under them. Season 2 of the series dropped on Netflix in September, and Netflix has provided a logline teasing where the story will go in season 3.
"Eddie and Susie (Kaya Scodelario) embark upon their most audacious project yet: building a casino in the Middle East," it reads. "But with danger lurking around every corner, has the Duke’s unchecked ambition finally gone too far?"
Whatever's coming next, the exit of Ings and Esposito certainly leaves a void that Wood and Bloom are equipped to fill. The two are international superstars thanks to their roles in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and their reprisals in The Hobbit prequels. They are frequently seen together on the fan convention circuit, but working together as actors on a new show is an entirely different beast. Fans will turn out just to see Frodo and Legolas together again, even if it's in a different form this time.
There are two seasons of The Gentlemen streaming now on Netflix for those that want to get caught up. The 2019 film is streaming there as well. Wood will abe back on our screens in Yellowjackets season 4, premiering on November 20 on Paramount+. The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies are both streaming now on HBO Max.
