The Last of Us is HBO's adaptation of Naughty Dog's beloved zombie video game series. The first season adapted the first game, and it was a smash hit. Pedro Pascal was terrific as jaded survivor Joel and Bella Ramsey amazing as his plucky charge Ellie, the one girl in all the world who seemed immune to the zombie plague. But when it was revealed that she'd have to die in order to create a cure, Joel couldn't let that happen, massacring a hospital full of people in the season finale in order to get her out alive. The second season will adapt the second game, The Last of Us: Part II, where we'll see the fallout of his decision.
Without spoiling anything, The Last of Us: Part II has some crazy plot twists that sharply divided fans when it came out in 2020. With a few years of distance, it feels like a lot of those fans have quieted down or even come around to appreciated the plot of The Last of Us: Part II. Still, when I say these plot twists are crazy, I mean it. I'm very curious to see how HBO will handle things in the second season of the TV show.
A lot of the plot twists come courtesy of a new character named Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), who appears for the first time in a new teaser trailer you can watch above. We also see Joel and Ellie, Joel's brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna), some fungal zombies, and Jeffrey Wright's new character Isaac.
I'm afraid to say anything else lest I give away something I shouldn't. All that's left now is to wait. The second season of The Last of Us will premiere on HBO and Max sometime in April, although the teaser doesn't give us an exact date. It will adapt the first half of The Last of Us: Part II. A third season will wrap up the story of that game. After that, who knows?
