The Last of Us season 3 is one of the most highly anticipated TV shows coming in 2027, but it's definitely not going to arrive as soon as fans were hoping.

Production on The Last of Us season 3 was reportedly going to finish sometime before the end of 2026. Production listings indicated that filming would wrap on Nov. 27, 2026. According to multiple sources on social media, that's not going to be the case. Production is now expected to take a break to end the year before restarting in January and continuing into February 2027.

HBO has not confirmed the filming timeline rumors and reports, of course, but sleuths are usually able to track production dates and timelines because the production listings are often posted online. That seems to be the case here.

The Last of Us season 3 definitely won't premiere anytime soon

With production on the final season of the hit HBO series scheduled to wrap before the end of 2026, fans were starting to get their hopes up that we could learn The Last of Us season 3 release date soon. There was some hope that, since it's already been 18 months since season 2 ended, season 3 would premiere sometime in early 2027.

With a November 2026 production wrap, an early 2027 premiere date for The Last of Us season 3 was always out of the question. With that said, we could have seen the season premiere sometime on HBO in April or May 2027. We saw season 2 premiere during that same window back in 2025. It also ensures The Last of Us season 3 arrives ahead of the deadline to be eligible for next year's Emmys.

Unfortunately, I just don't see that happening. If production continues through the end of February, there is absolutely no way a series with this many effects could be ready for a spring 2027 premiere. It's much more likely that The Last of Us season 3 will be pushed until the late summer or fall of next year.

That gives enough time for post-production and promotion, and it probably slots better in HBO's 2027 lineup given all the big releases on the docket for next year with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, The White Lotus, The Pitt, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and many more.

As mentioned, The Last of Us is officially the final season of the HBO series. There were reports and rumors for a long time that the series would be renewed for season 4 to make sure they had enough time to tell the story. Then, in September, Neil Druckmann, who co-created the series with Craig Mazin and left before season 3, revealed that the third season would be the show's last.

For those who have played the games, you know there's still a ton of ground to cover in season 3. As we learned in the season 2 finale, the perspective shifts from Ellie (Bella Ramsay) to Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) in season 3. I'm assuming that we're going to see Abby's story play out before it all comes together in the end, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Ramsay and Dever are obviously back for the third season, along with Isabela Merced, Gabriel Luna, Young Mazino, Spencer Lord, Tati Gabrielle, Michelle Mao, Ariela Barer, and Kyriana Kratter. We'll also see Jason Ritter, Jeffrey Wright, Peter Sarsgaard, Patrick Wilson, and more in the new season.

We'll share more news about The Last of Us season 3 as we find out! Stay tuned!
