Let's start by easing any potential fears about the fate of The Last of Us: No, the third season of the hit HBO show wasn't suddenly canceled mid-filming, but fans had a good reason to believe this was the case.

A report by entertainment outlet ScreenRant was published on social channels with the title "The Last Of Us Season 3 Filming Reportedly Cancelled," and the news spread like wildfire. Outlets like Movieweb were soon to follow with similar headlines, raising concerns among audiences worldwide about the likelihood of season 3 ever hitting the small screen. Fortunately, the situation isn't quite as dire as many feared.

Filming for The Last of Us season 3 wasn't canceled, but merely paused for a few weeks

Production for The Last of Us season 3 began back on March 2, 2026, in Vancouver under the working title "Calm Current" and is scheduled to continue all the way to November. However, filming was paused on June 1 and won't resume until after June 28, as revealed by the British Columbia Production Directory. Furthermore, the Los Angeles Times reports that this hiatus was always planned.

While HBO has yet to reveal an official explanation for the filming break, it is widely believed that it is the byproduct of the FIFA World Cup matches taking place in Vancouver from June 13 to July 7. With so much tourism being drawn to the city, it would be more complicated to close off entire streets or key locations to keep filming The Last of Us season 3, explaining why a pause was needed in the first place.

While The Last of Us HBO series wasn't canceled, it certainly seems like it might be coming to an end sooner than anticipated. Fans originally believed the story of Abby Anderson (Kaitlyn Dever) would be extended beyond next year. After all, Collider had the chance to talk with showrunner Craig Mazin back in 2025 and asked him whether there would be a potential fourth season, to which he replied: "There’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome."

Unfortunately, there might've been a change in plans over the past year. Back in January, Deadline asked Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content Casey Bloys whether the third season of The Last of Us would be the last, to which he replied: "It certainly seems that way." Granted, nothing has been confirmed just yet, but it wouldn't be shocking to learn that the show will see its last episodes released in 2027.

It is no secret that the first season of The Last of Us was met with overwhelmingly positive critical success. As if that wasn't enough, its finale drew 8.2 million viewers, which is an astonishing feat for a new TV show. When Craig Mazin teased that a potential fourth season could come our way, the second episode of season 2 had just been aired, meaning expectations were still sky-high for the HBO series. However, it isn't far-fetched to say those expectations weren't quite met.

The Last of Us season 2 received mixed to negative reactions from fans, proving to be as controversial as the second title in the video game franchise. Furthermore, its finale drew just 3.7 million viewers, which represents a 55% drop from its predecessor. If history were to repeat itself, then viewership numbers would drop for season 3, and even more so for season 4. That's why HBO might instead decide to go out with a bang next year.

Fortunately, The Last of Us season 3 is indeed alive, and filming hasn't been suddenly canceled. So even if the stories of Ellie and Abby come to an end next year, there's still one more big (and ruthless) adventure to go.

The Last of Us season 3 will be released in 2027.
