If you’ve been hesitant to raise your wands for the latest Harry Potter adaptation, then this trailer will wipe that hesitancy out of your mind, as if it were Obliviated.
HBO dropped an official teaser trailer for the first season of the Harry Potter TV show, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which is the English title. In America, it’s Sorcerer’s Stone, but this show’s goal has always been accuracy. And honestly, it looks just as magical as you would expect it to be—and more.
To be frank, when the first teaser dropped, I was excited for the show, but I wasn’t as eager as I am now. Something felt off, as if HBO was trying to cater more towards an adult crowd and lean into a dramatic undertone. But this trailer really stepped it up.
We get a good, hard first look at the core trio and how they’ll interact in several scenes. We also get our first look at how certain characters speak or act. My personal favorite was Paapa Essiedu as Snape, because honestly, I was a little “eh” about the casting at first, just because I didn’t know if anyone could beat Alan Rickman. But just from this teaser, he seems to nail that personality.
But that’s not the main thing that drew me in—it's the magic itself that we see.
We finally feel the childhood wonder of the books
Several moments throughout this teaser trailer made me smile because it felt like we were already back in Hogwarts. One particular moment—or several, really—is when we see the core trio in their classes.
I think for something like Harry Potter, it’s a blessing to see them actually in school, working again, and just casting spells, in comparison to how the films got so dark towards the end. I am expecting that for this series too, but it's lovely to feel as if this is almost a refresh before things turn bad again.
It's also nice to see Harry (Dominic McLaughlin) show just how he feels about everyone praising him when he doesn’t feel like a magical wizard or all-powerful. That’s the kind of stuff that I know HBO will do well—combining the childlike aspects of the magic classes while also balancing real emotions and feelings that we didn’t have the time to explore in the movies.
But the real magic is seen throughout the teaser. Watching the children interact with each other and become friends, cheering Harry on in Quidditch, seeing them attempt to cast spells and take on the troll and everything else in between—it was all just wonderful.
One of my personal favorite instances of magic didn’t even involve the children, but two unnamed adults who run across a bridge and light it up with fairy lights using their wands. That made me happy for two reasons: One, we’ll be able to see more whimsical magic and people having fun with it instead of just spells, and two, that is most likely a flashback of sorts, which means we'll get so much more story than ever before. Nothing is confirmed, and it's just a theory, but I have a feeling that is the case.
Even so, I just can't wait. This teaser has officially won me over.
Could the color grading still use some work? A little, yeah. But there’s so much going for this. The trailer features moments from the books we didn’t see in the films, plus new moments that make it even more emotional. However, there are also those magical moments we all know—like Harry trying on the invisibility cloak for the first time, or learning the classic swish-and-flick method.
Everything is just so well done so far. And as we get closer to the release date, things will only improve. They’re already filming season 2, which is wild, and it makes me even more excited for the show's premiere on Dec. 25, 2026.
