Christopher Nolan has unleashed something more terrifying than the wrath of Poseidon, and that is a box office juggernaut. Since its release, The Odyssey has been shattering multiple impressive records, and it shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.
Not only did the Greek epic have the biggest opening weekend for a non-franchised R-rated film ever, but it has also become 2026's third-highest-grossing movie behind titles such as Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (both of which are part of pre-existing sagas tailored for the massive children's demographic).
Tides kept favoring Nolan's film after the premiere, as The Odyssey had a second-weekend drop of just -30%, grossing $87 million domestically in the process. For reference, Nolan's previous movie, Oppenheimer, had a second-weekend drop of -43.4% and still went on to gross nearly $1 billion at the worldwide box office. But just when it seemed there were no more records to be shattered, Nolan's latest project achieved yet another impressive feat.

13 days after its release, The Odyssey has officially grossed $334.1 million at the domestic box office, surpassing the $330 million that Oppenheimer grossed during its entire theatrical run. Furthermore, Nolan's Greek epic has reached the $700 million mark globally and is all but guaranteed to surpass $1 billion.
A key thing to take into consideration is that The Odyssey hasn't been released yet in key markets such as China, Japan, and Korea, where it is expected to find major success. As reported by Variety, Imax China is set to “dedicate the vast majority of its nearly 800-screen network” to Nolan's latest film.
Projections suggest The Odyssey could end up grossing somewhere between $1.1 and $1.5 billion worldwide, with $1.3 billion being the safest bet. To put this astonishing feat into perspective, here is a list of the top 10 highest-grossing R-rated films, and where Nolan's latest project would rank among them:

Looking at the list, it's easy to see how many of the films are either sequels or part of pre-existing franchises like Marvel or Demon Slayer. It and The Odyssey are the only adaptations without a prequel, and even then, projections indicate there will be a significant gap between their respective box office performances.
If The Odyssey reaches the $1.3 billion mark, it would become Christopher Nolan's highest-grossing project ever, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises, which culminated its run with a gross of $1.085 billion.
But as much as The Odyssey has been finding a lot of success, it is now set to face fierce competition. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has surpassed Nolan's film in ticket presales, and it is set to have an opening weekend of $300 million domestically and $800 million worldwide in the best-case scenario. As such, it will be interesting to see whether venues opt to remove showings for The Odyssey to accommodate the demand for Marvel's latest blockbuster.
In a sense, The Odyssey's fate is out of its own hands now. While the film is still expected to have a box office bump from being released in international territories like China, it should also have a significant third-weekend drop now that Spider-Man: Brand New Day has arrived.
Fortunately, an analysis by Forbes states that Nolan's latest film has a break-even point of somewhere between $625 and $750 million, so not only will the film recover its initial investment, but it will become profitable for Universal Pictures.
