The second season of Squid Game is officially off and running on Netflix. We finally find out what happened to Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) after he won the squid games in the first season of the show. He walked away with a huge cash prize, but he felt terrible about it because he only got it after hundreds of other players died. Instead of using the money to live on easy street the rest of his life, he decided to hire people to help him find whoever is running games and bring them down.
The quest led to him entering the squid games for a second time, and things were just as wild as the first. The second season ended with lots of story still untold, so what happens next?
The good news is that we'll find out before too long: Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk and his team have already written and filmed a third season of the show. Season 3 might not be quite ready to show off yet — post-production takes time — but we won't be waiting nearly as long for season 3 as we were for season 2. According to Lee Jung-jae, Squid Game season 3 will be out on Netflix in 2025.
The caveat is that we don't know exactly when the third season of Squid Game will land on Netflix. If I had to guess, I'd say that they'll give us a year to stew over the events of season 2 before releasing season 3 around the holidays.
Season 3 will also be the final season of the show. "I think that the story I wanted to tell came to a full closure at the end of season 3," Hwang Dong-hyuk explained to Entertainment Weekly. "The story that I both wanted to tell and that I am capable of telling through Gi-hun, it has been told with season 3."
If shows go on for too long they have a habit of overstaying their welcome, so I'm perfectly find with the idea of Squid Game wrapping itself up with three seasons. Meanwhile, there's still Netflix's reality show Squid Game: The Challenge to check out if you can't get enough of this world, and there's even a rumor that Fight Club director David Fincher might remake the original Korean-language series in English, although that hasn't been confirmed yet.
