Invincible is one of the finest superhero shows out there, and it's just getting bigger and better with each passing season. Season 4 is currently in the middle of production, with a release date set for 2026. The animation team believe they are outdoing themselves.
It's not just the scope of the story and the ever-thickening plot that gets dialed up to 11 each season, but the animation itself continues to improve. When you compare season 1 to season 3, the difference side-by-side is quite staggering. The animation team works tirelessly to make the show look as visually stunning as it can possibly be, and over the years, that's meant long wait times between seasons.
As Invincible enters its fourth season, things are only going to get more chaotic, especially with the arrival of General Thragg, the most powerful of all the Viltrumites. The story takes a sharp and bold step deeper into space opera territory, while also building on Earth-based conflicts, such as the Martian sequids and the all-new story with Damien Darkblood.
To accommodate all of these epic story arcs, the animation team at Skybound believe they've taken things to new heights (literally). Speaking to Screen Rant, head of Skybound Animation Marge Dean rhapsodized about the scale of animation coming our way.
"As we continue to perfect our pipeline — not just the technical one but the creative pipeline as well —we keep amping up the skills of our team," Dean said. "I'm just so excited. There's so much to be excited for with the characters and the story, but I'm personally just excited for how much we've amped up the quality of the animation to another level. It's my intention, and I share it with everybody, that we improve with each season...We know what's coming in Invincible season 4, it's going to blow people's minds."
Additionally, animatic editor Lindsay Myers shared that the process of creating such immense animation was a big learning curve. "It's definitely a different beast. I'm kind of surprised how quickly I got used to it, actually."
Churning out a new season of Invincible every year is a monumental undertaking, but the team appears more than up to the task. Invincible is, so far, a masterful superhero story, and there's enough story to last up to 10 seasons. How will it look by the end? Well, it'll probably blow people's minds 10 times over.
In the meanwhile, feel free to check out Invincible on Prime Video. You can stream The Boys while you're at it; the streamer is the go-to spot for intense superhero dramas.
