Scott M. Gimple is essentially the 'Kevin Feige' of The Walking Dead. It's his job to keep the AMC zombie franchise moving forward, determining which avenues to explore and which characters to keep developing. In the years since the main show ended, we've seen the franchise expand into wild new places, such as Manhattan and even Paris.
According to Gimple, The Walking Dead still has so much more to offer. He's on record as saying that he would like to see projects set in other continents, including Asia and Africa. In Daryl Dixon season 3, we'll see post-apocalyptic England and Spain for the first time. It seems like the franchise's globe-trotting adventures are only just beginning.
What's more, Gimple doesn't rule out the return of the main series at some point in the future, including 16-episode seasons. Fans have gotten used to shortened, six-episode seasons in the current era of spinoffs. Even feature-length movies remain a possibility. If there's one thing Gimple promises, it's that nothing is off the table. In an interview with SFX Magazine, it's pointed out that the TV franchise began 15 years ago with the first-ever episode of The Walking Dead in 2010. Gimple thinks there's "potential" for the franchise to endure another 15 years, beyond the year 2040.
"The Walking Dead is about compelling characters in an unforgiving world, but one that is not without hope," Gimple said. "Because the stakes are so high, the choices these characters make define them and change them, one way or another. That's the stuff of a great story. And the scariness, the action, the emotion, the discovery… That can go on and on, as long as we have some terrific characters."
Gimple went on to explain that there's numerous characters that he wants to bring back. "There are characters from every Walking Dead series that I would love to tell stories with again, some picking up from the last time we saw them, maybe seeing some after a lot of time has passed," he said. How about Heath, perhaps?
The Walking Dead Universe continues with the second season of Dead City on May 4. That show will continue to follow Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they explore zombie-ridden Manhattan. And later this year, we'll be catching up with Daryl and Carol in the third season of Daryl Dixon. The Walking Dead marches on. Will you be tuning in? Tell us in the comments down below!
