The Wheel of Time fans launch campaign to urge Amazon and Sony to renew the excellent series

Amazon and Sony have yet to formally renew The Wheel of Time for more seasons. These fans are trying to change that.

The Wheel of Time season 3 may be over, but if the fandom has its way there will be plenty more to come.

This month marked the launch of a concentrated fan campaign asking Amazon and Sony to renew The Wheel of Time for more seasons. The Wheel of Time is based on a massive 15-book fantasy series — one of the most iconic of all time — so there's plenty more story to tell. Yet despite the show's third season hitting series-high ratings on IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Nielsen's streaming charts, the studios still have not officially pulled the trigger on a follow-up. The show's global fanbase is aiming to change that with "an appreciation-centered campaign calling on Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television to officially greenlight additional seasons of the beloved fantasy series."

While these sorts of campaigns often rely on pressuring studios, this one isn't just about the pressure; it's also about showing love for the series. The press release for the #RenewWoT campaign states that its message is simple: "Thank you for this incredible show. Please give us more.”

“We know renewals depend on a lot of factors,” one organizer said, “and maybe it just hasn’t been announced yet. By showing the studios how much we appreciate the show and want more, we are either validating a decision already made, or giving them a helpful nudge.”

As for the specifics and how you can get involved, here are a few ways:

  • The organizers have set up an e-mail tool so that you can email the studios a pre-written or personalized message requesting more seasons with one click.
  • Fridays at 1 PM PT, fans use #RenewWoT to trend the campaign and highlight specific cast/crew appreciation themes.
  • A fan website RenewWoT.com has been created by the popular Wheel of Time site WoTseries, which features additional resources including a fan petition, performance stats, and testimonials.

The petition only takes a second to sign: you can find it here.

"The Wheel of Time is a rare example of a major fantasy adaptation with deep character arcs, inclusive casting, and intricate world-building. Consistently improving each season, fans believe its potential is far from finished," reads the press release. Fans from the U.S., UK, Brazil and India have all gotten involved so far, with more joining the ranks every day. Together, they strive to "[highlight] their favorite cast members, unforgettable scenes, and the inclusive, imaginative world that has drawn millions of viewers around the world."

Amazon and Sony would be crazy not to renew The Wheel of Time

As the press release states, there are a lot of moving parts when it comes to renewing a show as large and intricate as The Wheel of Time. Around the time of the season finale, showrunner Rafe Judkins told The Hollywood Reporter that he had been asking Amazon "what is the end game for the show? I really want to deliver this full series, so how do we best do that?" It's entirely possible that the renewal hasn't yet been announced because the studios are trying to figure out the overall arc of the series, now that its success is indisputable. But the sooner it's renewed, the sooner actors and crew can sign contracts that will get the ball rolling on filming, and the sooner we get to watch it. That's what everyone wants, right?

Regardless of the time that Amazon and Sony are taking to announce the renewal, Judkins painted a strong picture for the studios' support for the series. "I think one reason we went with Amazon, because we had options of who was going to buy the series when we first went out with it, is that Amazon felt like a place where they do want to invest in shows for the long term," he said. "There are not a lot of places doing that anymore. ForWheel of Time, it’s really important for us to be somewhere that does want to invest in shows for the long term and not just for the splash and leave. So I am hopeful that we will get to finish this story."
