2026 has been an amazing year for fantasy fans, but sadly one of the most anticipated releases of the year has officially been pulled from the calendar. In a puzzling move, Netflix has delayed the fifth season of The Witcher and will no longer release the final season of the series in 2026 as had originally been the plan.
Interestingly, there has been no confirmation as to why The Witcher season 5 has been delayed to 2027. What’s on Netflix, which was first to report the news, suggested that perhaps it could be due to the season’s VFX still being worked on or Netflix realizing there is simply no room for the show on its slate. Regardless of why Netflix made the decision, it’s certainly a puzzling one.
The Witcher season 5 wrapped way back in September 2025, and all indications have been that season 5 would arrive in late 2026. Many had been speculating that we’d see The Witcher return to its old stomping grounds as a potential December release, but that will no longer be the case with season 5 pushed back to 2027.
Truthfully, that might be best for the show. 2026 has been a stacked year for fantasy releases, and there are several high-profile fantasy shows still to come, including The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Black Doves, 3 Body Problem, and Harry Potter. It’s possible that Netflix felt it best to hold The Witcher’s final season for 2027 due to there being less competition, what with so many big fantasy franchises releasing new episodes in 2026.
There are certainly some big fantasy properties coming in 2027, but the calendar is not nearly as stacked as this year has been. As such, Netflix could leverage the final season of The Witcher as part of its schedule when the competition is not as strong.
This would definitely be wise given ratings for the show’s fourth season were down sharply, with a 50% decline in viewership. Season 4 was the first without Henry Cavill and the first for Liam Hemsworth, which likely played a role in the audience decline. What was once such a strong franchise for Netflix is sadly looking to go out with a whimper, and that is where Netflix delaying the final season doesn’t make sense.
We already know that interest in The Witcher is declining, so it would seem the smarter move would be to get the season out in front of audiences rather than to prolong its return, as doing so could lead to further decline in interest. Sure, the diehard fans will show up regardless of when Netflix releases the final season, but the further the show gets pushed back, the higher the chance more casual fans will forget about it or lose interest in watching.
Hopefully, Netflix will choose to release the final season earlier in the year rather than pushing it for the back half of 2027; however, there’s really no telling what the streamer might do.
