Outlander fans are currently in the midst of the back half of the seventh season of their favorite time-traveling romance epic. New episodes started airing on Starz on Friday, November 22 and dropped every Friday thereafter until January 3, last Friday. That episode, "Written In My Own Heart's Blood," was the penultimate episode of the season. So that means the big finale is dropping today, right?
No. The show is skipping this week. The season finale, titled "One Hundred Thousand Angels," is not currently available on the Starz app, where new episodes usually drop at midnight early Friday mornings. The season finale will not air on Starz tonight in its usual timeslot of 8:00 p.m. EST. Instead, Starz will air the 7th annual Critics Choice Celebration of Black Cinema & Television. After that, they'll air the movie Plane at 9:00 p.m. EST.
The season 7 finale will drop next Friday, January 17, on both the Starz app and linearally on Starz itself. So if you're frantically refreshing the Starz app wondering why the new episode isn't showing up, just know you're not crazy. They're not releasing the episode for another week.
As for why they've delayed the season 7 finale, the obvious answer is that they wanted to air the award ceremony instead. But I also wonder if they're trying to build a little hype ahead of the last new episode fans will get for a while. The eighth and final season of Outlander is shot, but it's possible we won't see those episodes until 2026. We will be getting an Outlander spinoff this year called Blood of My Blood; it's a prequel that explores the romances between Jamie's parents and Claire's parents.
Beware SPOILERS for the Outlander season 7 finale below
It's a bummer that fans can't watch the Outlander season 7 finale today, especially after Starz aired episodes uninterrupted for seven straight weeks; they didn't take a break for the holiday season, when shows are often apt to take a week off, so this break may come as a surprise to a lot of viewers.
That said, TV Line did get their hands on an image from the finale, but beware: it reveals something about a character who's fate was left up in the air in the penultimate episode. Look if you dare:
In the last episode, Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) was shot while attending to the wounded on a Revolutionary War battlefield. This image reveals that she survives. And sure, she and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) are the main characters of the show, so there was very little doubt that she would pull through, but it still counts as a spoiler.
We'll find out the details when "One Hundred Thousand Angels" drops on Starz and the Starz app next Friday, January 17.
