Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is a new Game of Thrones video game that allows fans to play as the new bastard heir to House Tyre, a small noble house in the North. Playing as a knight, a sellsword or an assassin, players will traverse the Seven Kingdoms; fight warriors, wildlings and more; meet famous characters from the series; and broker political deals.
The whole thing is set during the fourth season of the Game of Thrones TV show. Overall, Kingsroad looks like one of the most robust Game of Thrones video games yet produced, not that the bar for that is spectacularly high. The game is due out this year, but developer Netmarble is still tweaking things. In fact, they're holding a closed beta test, meaning players will get to play the game early and then give feedback, from January 16, this Thursday, through January 22. And today, January 14, is the last day you can sign up! You can do that on the game's official website; simply hit the "Sign Up Now" button and follow the prompts. You can apply through midnight today.
In the beta test, you'll play around with the different classes, test yourself in combat, explore the game's open world, experience the story, and then let the developers know what works and what doesn't so they can modify things ahead of the release date, which is still shrounded in mystery; all we know is that the game is coming out sometime in 2025. The website also promises that beta testers will "receive exclusive rewards after launch." I have a sinking suspicion that means you'll get a pile of whatever in-game currency this game uses, but I can't be sure.
Kingsroad does look cool, but the drawback is that it is a mobile game meant to be played on your phone, and mobile games have baggage attached to them. That often means microtransactions, as well as controls that are difficult and cumbersome. I know a lot of Game of Thrones fans would love a big fat console video game that would let them explore Westeros up on their huge TV screens, and Game of Thrones: Kingsroad doesn't appear to be that. That said, this beta test can be done on PCs as well as mobile devices, which suggests that there may be more than one way to play Kingsroad when it finally comes out.
The beta test is currently open to people in the United States of America, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Turkey, Switzerland, Sweden, Poland, Norway, Austria, Belgium, Ukraine, Denmark, Ireland, Romania, Finland, Portugal, Greece, Hungary, Slovakia, Luxembourg, Croatia, Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania. If you're interested, hop on it soon!
