Star Wars fans have an idea for an Andor spinoff series, and Tony Gilroy, the Andor creator, has given his stamp of approval, too.

Andor has easily been acclaimed as the best thing about Star Wars since Disney bought the franchise. Set before the events of Rogue One, it follows the title character (Diego Luna) as he goes from normal guy to a key Rebel spy. The show was acclaimed for its political drama, both in the Empire and the growing Rebellion, mixed with great action sequences and the powerful performance of Geneieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma.

Originally planned for five seasons, Gilroy realized that due to the realities of this epic production and the schedules of the actors, he had to push it into just two seasons. The last year jumped across the timeline to show the Empire growing in power before ending before the events of Rogue One.

The show was a major success with Gilroy earning an Emmy award. While the show appears to have been done with, Gilroy may be open to a great spinoff idea!

Tony Gilroy approves of the Andor spinoff about Vel and Kleya

Speaking to The Ringer-Verse, Gilroy discussed that the two characters he would miss writing about the most on the show were Rebel operatives Vel Sartha (Faye Marsay) and Kleya Marki (Elizabeth Dulau). The two Rebel soldiers got along well on the show and were key parts of the growing Alliance cell.

The podcast hosts then shared with Gilroy a fan-submitted idea for a spin-off: After the Rebellion defeats the Empire, Vel and Kleya would team up to hunt down former Imperial officers. Their “aid” in this would be Deadra Meero (Denise Gough), the Imperial officer who ended the show framed for crimes and imprisoned. The plot compared Meero to Hannibal Lecter in supposedly helping hunt Imperials, when in reality, she was hoping to get revenge on the people who imprisoned her.

That’s a hip idea," Gilroy responded. "I’m sure Kathy [Kennedy, Lucasfilm president] will hear about that one. That’s a good one."

The concept is very intriguing. It’s established that after the New Republic was formed, many Imperials were given a chance to redeem themselves by working for the Republic. Many other Imperials continued to fight on, supposedly in scattered and weak groups. What the Republic doesn’t know is that these remnants are secretly working together, laying the groundwork for what will become the First Order.

A spinoff touching on that would be a delightful idea. It can show the fan-favorite pair of Vel and Kleya as a team, still scarred by their experiences while trying to catch more Imperials. It can also be a nice focus on the immediate aftermath of the Empire’s fall and the chaos across the galaxy.

Adding Meero would make it even better, as Gough’s performance was a highlight of the series. Catching up to how time in prison changed her can be a more nuanced character while still out for herself, a dynamic fans loved.

This is all speculation for now, yet Gilroy’s approval might sway Disney to try, as this is one Star Wars spinoff fans would more than love to see.
