Few shows get the chance to end on their own terms, but Amazon’s Upload is one of the lucky ones. After years of cliffhangers that left fans anxiously awaiting answers, the sci-fi comedy is heading into its fourth and final season, a season that will bring a proper ending to Nathan, Ingrid, Nora, Luke, and all of our favorite characters’ journeys.
Season 4 of Upload promises to go out with a bang. The official synopsis for the season promises a high-stakes showdown as sentient AI turns against humanity, threatening not only Lakeview but the real world as well. With greedy executives scheming, long-simmering mysteries coming to light, and heartbreak unfolding in both virtual and real life, the final four episodes will push every character to their limits.
For Robbie Amell and the rest of the cast, the chance to stick the landing is something they don’t take for granted, especially in a landscape where few shows are given the chance to craft a proper conclusion to their story. Although the final season consists of just four episodes, those four episodes are filled with unforgettable moments that give every character the chance to shine.
Ahead of the final season’s debut on August 25, Winter is Coming’s Cody Schultz caught up with stars Amell, Allegra Edwards, and Kevin Bigley, and executive producer Maxwell Vivian at San Diego Comic-Con to reflect on the rare opportunity given to the show to craft a planned finale that fans won’t want to miss.
'It’s the ending fans deserve': Robbie Amell & Kevin Bigley on Upload’s final season
For Amell, the biggest relief in heading into season 4 was knowing Upload would get the ending it deserved.
“Such a big thing for us was just not knowing if we were going to get a final season, and our show is such a cliffhanger show. It would be a terrible way to leave the fans,” he explained, adding that creator Greg Daniels had always mapped out a four-season plan. “Good on Amazon, giving us a chance to close it out and make a series finale.”
That closure doesn’t just benefit longtime viewers, but also those still discovering the series.
“It’s great for people who watch the show, and it's great for people who have never seen the show because if you are still discovering it, they can watch the whole thing. You get a beginning, a middle, and an end,” Amell said.
Kevin Bigley echoed the excitement, teasing a final run that brings the show’s signature blend of genres to new heights: “It's chock full of action and suspense and comedy and sci-fi. It's completely more of the same but heightened.”
And while the season promises spectacle, Amell emphasized that the heart of the series remains intact.
“Greg and the writing team really delivers on a series finale and a final season and gives everybody their chance.”
Allegra Edwards teases Ingrid’s Upload final season journey
For Allegra Edwards, season 4 offers plenty of exciting new developments for Ingrid as well as the world of Upload itself.
“I am excited for the fans to see Ingrid working in a different job that's a little bit better than retail,” Edwards teased. “I'm excited for the fans to see AI Guy and all of his changes because he has gone through a lot, and he's gonna continue to go through a lot. I'm excited for fans to see how we expand the world and talk about technology in a kind of real and interesting and sort of scary way.”
Looking back on her journey with the character, Edwards couldn’t help but reflect on how much Ingrid has grown — and how much fun it’s been to play her.
“It has been such a gift to play Ingrid. First of all, I love comedy, it’s what I prefer, and she is just so ripe for awkward situations and hijinks,” she said. “Then secondly, she's been on a really interesting arc journey where you don't just have an epiphany one day and then suddenly become easy and kind and good-natured and compassionate and nice and likable. It is down and up, it's a mistake, and then a correction. It's been really fun to navigate the pivots and carve that out with the writers. They did such an incredible job of making her journey what it was.”
Upload’s final season aims to do justice to fans’ investment
As Ingrid’s arc continues to evolve, the same can be said for the show itself. Crafting a final season meant giving both the characters and the audience the kind of ending they deserved, something executive producer and writer Maxwell Vivian says was an ongoing conversation in the writers’ room.
“At the end of season 3, we didn't know that season 4 would be the last yet,” Vivian explained. “You always keep an end in mind, but we definitely didn't have like the specific scenes that we're gonna end the show perfectly plotted out in our heads. Coming into the season 4 room it was really about following all the ideas we had. Go down the road with them, figure out what feels best, what works, what's [going to be] satisfying.”
That process ultimately led to a season that not only brings closure, but also rewards the years fans have spent invested in these characters.
“I think I'm most excited for people to see, obviously the ultimate end, but along the way, we really wanted to do justice to the time that people have put into our characters and our show,” Vivian added. “I’m excited for people to see this four-episode journey that everyone goes on. Everyone has a lot to do, they’re packed episodes. I guess it's a little bit of a cop out, but I'm excited for everyone to see the entire thing.”
Upload season 4 drops Monday, Aug. 25 on Prime Video.
