After nearly a decade away from the world that launched her career, Veronica Roth is returning to the Divergent universe with a brand new novel that promises to reimagine the story fans thought they knew by heart.
At BookCon 2026, Roth revealed The Sixth Faction, her first new Divergent novel in eight years. The book will hit shelves on October 6, 2026, marking the 15-year anniversary year of the original Divergent novel.
This notably won't be a sequel, prequel or spinoff but something entirely different. As Roth explained, "This is not a sequel, this is not a prequel. This is an alternate universe in which Tris chooses a different faction than Dauntless."
Roth has spent years distancing herself from the series that made her famous and now she's back with a bang.
What we know about The Sixth Faction
The Sixth Faction will reintroduce readers to protagonist Beatrice Prior, rewinding the story to the beginning where she must choose her faction after being labeled as Divergent. But this time, Beatrice makes a completely different choice than the one that defined the original trilogy.
The book will launch a new duology, with the sequel set to publish on February 2, 2027. This means fans will get two full novels exploring this alternate timeline.
According to publisher Erica Sussman, "The Sixth Faction is a tour de force. We were thrilled to explore this new take on the Divergent world with Veronica, who has taken her storytelling talents to new heights that will thrill longtime fans of the series and delight readers new to the world."
A fresh start for Roth
Roth began by brainstorming elements of Divergent she wanted to "fix," particularly criticisms about the original series' "unstable" worldbuilding. She first tested the waters by writing a single alternate-universe chapter for her newsletter, where Beatrice was factionless rather than Dauntless. The positive response encouraged her to expand it into a full novel.
Roth admits she's "nervous" about the release, particularly about "unavoidably encountering the least generous interpretations of my work and what I'm doing," noting the challenges authors face when returning to their breakout series.
The Divergent legacy
The Divergent series has been a cultural phenomenon since the first book debuted in 2011. The original trilogy consists of Divergent (2011), Insurgent (2012) and Allegiant (2013), followed by Four (2014), a collection of short stories from the perspective of Tobias Eaton.
The series sold over 40 million copies worldwide and spawned a major film franchise. The three films: Divergent (2014), Insurgent (2015) and Allegiant (2016) grossed over $765 million worldwide combined. However, a planned fourth film, Ascendant, was ultimately cancelled after the third film's disappointing box office performance.
The original Divergent story takes place in a post-apocalyptic Chicago where society is divided into five factions based on virtues: Abnegation (selflessness), Dauntless (bravery), Erudite (intelligence), Amity (peace) and Candor (honesty).
Sixteen-year-old Beatrice Prior is raised in Abnegation but discovers during her aptitude test that she is Divergent, possessing traits of multiple factions. She's warned to keep this secret as Divergents are considered dangerous.
At the Choosing Ceremony, Beatrice shocks her family by transferring to Dauntless, eventually taking the name Tris. There she forms a romantic relationship with her instructor, Tobias "Four" Eaton, and faces brutal training while uncovering a conspiracy by Erudite to overthrow the government.
This choice to join Dauntless sets everything in motion with the action, the romance with Four, the conflict with Erudite and ultimately the entire trajectory of the trilogy.
How everything could change in The Sixth Faction
With The Sixth Faction, that choice will be different. If Tris doesn't choose Dauntless, the entire story changes. She might never meet Four the same way and never be positioned to discover the Erudite conspiracy from within Dauntless.
The alternate universe format gives Roth the creative freedom to explore new storylines, develop different relationships and potentially address the worldbuilding elements she felt could be stronger.
It's a chance to answer the question every fan has asked at some point: what if things had gone differently?
Alongside The Sixth Faction, Roth is also releasing Seek the Traitor's Son on May 12, 2026, the first book in a new dystopian romance series called Burning Empire. She's currently editing sequels to both projects.
While Roth has no plans to continue the alternate-universe Divergent beyond the planned duology, she has learned to "never say never."
For fans who have been waiting years for more time in the Divergent world, The Sixth Faction is that rare chance to experience the story again for the first time, but different.
The Sixth Faction by Veronica Roth will be published on October 6, 2026, by HarperCollins.
