Amazon officially renews The Legend of Vox Machina for season 4!
By Dan Selcke
The Legend of Vox Machina is currently tearing through its third season on Amazon Prime Video, and the fans are responding: the most recent installment, "Thordak's Throne," is the highest-rated episode in the show's history on IMDb, and it looks like they're going to charge full-throttle towards an exciting endgame; the final three episodes of season 3 drop tomorrow.
Vox Machina is an animated adaptation of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign played by the voice actors of Critical Role, and it has everything you'd expect from a show with that pedigree: adventure, violence, goofy jokes, dragons and more. For this TV version, the cast and crew have changed the plot around a bit so the dramatic twists hit harder, and we can't say for sure that the season 3 finale will follow the game beat for beat. In Critical Role's original version, the adventures of the Vox Machina crew continue for a while after this point in the story. For a minute, it wasn't clear if we would see those continued adventures, but now, according to Deadline, Amazon has officially renewed the show for a fourth season!
“We are beyond thrilled – and grateful – to continue the epic and wild adventures of Vex, Vax, Keyleth, Percy, Pike, Grog and everyone’s favorite character – Scanlan,” said executive producer Sam Riegel, who also plays Scanlan, as you probably guessed. “With each season, this show levels up, and we already have big plans to level up both our heroes and villains in Season Four.”
Not long before this, the cast and crew were playing coy about a potential fourth season, with producer and star Travis Willingham (he plays the barbarian Grog) making it sound like it was on the bubble. "We were thrilled to receive a season 3, and we took the extra runway to make sure that we could get as much of this story in there as we can," he recently told Radio Times. "[I]f people tune in and we continue to thrill audiences, then I hope we get to tell this story for as long as they will give us. So I guess people just have to tune in and we'll see how we do."
Amazon has also ordered an animated adaptation of an entirely different Critical Role campaign called Mighty Nein, which Willingham says he's "stoked" about. We don't know exactly when Mighty Nein will be out, but for a minute I wondered if they would wrap up Vox Machina and transition into Mighty Nein as a kind of spiritual sequel, rather than continue to make new seasons of Vox Machina itself.
But we're getting both! The season 3 finale of The Legend of Vox Machina drops tomorrow, October 24, on Amazon Prime Video.
