With the enormous success of Baldur’s Gate 3, gamers have been eagerly awaiting the next big AAA game from the world of Dungeons and Dragons. From Invoke Studios comes Warlock, a dark fantasy action RPG that explores the journey of a dark wizard in the employ of a supernatural being. During the Gamescom Opening Night on August 25, Wizards of the Coast revealed the first alpha gameplay footage of Warlock, and it is a sight to behold!
Warlock's main character is Kaatri, "an experienced veteran turned warlock" who "makes a dangerous pact with the witch Tasha to find someone she's lost." The footage released for the upcoming game gives us a first look at Kaatri as she moves about the world and gives us a taste of what she can do. Let's get right down to it and break down the footage!
Warlock shows its main protagonist flexing her power and fighting dangerous enemies
The video begins with Kaatri having a conversation with her patron, Tasha, an Archfey witch. After the two of them share a few cryptic words together, Tasha casts a spell to give Kaatri the ability to see through her eyes before sending Kaatri on her way. Kaatri then appears on a hill overlooking the village of Crickshank, as Tasha's voice commands her to seek out raw magic.
Kaatri is joined by an imp named Skev, who warns her that the people of Crickshank won't welcome the presence of a warlock. In one of her first displays of power, Kaatri uses a spell called Tasha's Leash to open the way into the town. She then receives intel from a local beggar that people in the village tend to disappear into a cellar, never to be seen again.
As Kaatri investigates, we see her using spells such as Levitate and Misty Step (a teleportation spell) to traverse deep into a secret tunnel. She then utilizes a popular warlock spell from the D&D handbook, Black Tentacles, to create a pathway through a crumbling ruin. They soon reach their first battle encounter, as Kaatri uses both magic and melee to fight off what looks to be undead creatures as well as a one-eyed monster that resembles the famous Beholder from D&D.
After Kaatri and Skev make their escape from the underground ruins, Kaatri begins to sense raw magic coming from a zombified giant stalking nearby. We see a dark altar appear as Kaatri places some nasty-looking ingredients around an occult symbol, and rain begins to fall. Katri magically casts lightning to shock several enemies at once, implying that she must first summon the storm before using such an ability.
It appears that besides using magic and weapons interchangeably, Kaatri can also switch between melee weapons, as she slashes with a sword one moment then bashes with a hammer the next. But it's the magic she wields that looks the most fun to me, as Kaatri shoots off iconic Eldrich Blasts and uses Misty Step to evade her enemies. There's also the standard dodge and roll to evade attacks, for those who prefer a familiar strategy.
For alpha footage, the gameplay for Warlock looks pretty great so far! The graphics are smooth, the combat looks fun, and the spells are familiar to D&D fans while still having their own original flair. Warlock will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Steam, and Epic Games in 2027 and can be added to a wishlist now.
