The Alien franchise started waaaaaay back in 1979, and has had its ups and downs since then. It's been getting a bit of its groove back in recent years with movies like Alien: Covenant and most recently Alien: Romulus, which came out last year. FX and Hulu are going to try and keep that role going with Alien: Earth, the first-ever Alien TV series set to air sometime this summer.
That release window comes courtesy of the show's new teaser trailer, which you can watch above. There's not a whole lot to say about the trailer itself; we don't get much in the way of footage I imagine will appear in the actual show. We see things through the point of view of an alien xenomorph as it careers through a CGI spaceship and peers through a window to behold...Earth! Oh s*it, that's where we live!
The plot of the show involves a spaceship crashing to Earth and letting loose this "perfect" lifeform, the same one that tormented Sigourney Weaver in the original Alien quadrilogy. Alien: Earth takes place before the original Alien movie, which might be out sync with the lore of the series established up to that point, since to my knowledge there's never been any indication that the Xenomorphs had ever visited Earth.
Anyway, a cast that includes Sydney Chandler, Timothy Olyphant, Alex Lawther and Samuel Blenkin will deal with this threat; we don't see any of them in the teaser trailer, that will come later. We also got a new poster:
I don't know if "We were safer in space" has the same iconic ring as "In space, no one can hear you scream," but at least they're trying to make a new tagline. One thing that fans should be happy about is that this show is managed by Noah Hawley, who has crafted the excellent Fargo series for FX. Maybe he can spin the same kind of magic for the Alien franchise. We'll find out sometime this summer.
If you're wondering, summer this year runs from Friday, June 20 to Monday, September 22. We'll keep our ear to the ground for more.
