If you love movies, TV, sci-fi and fantasy, you're gonna have a busy summer. The final season of Squid Game already came and west. We're in the middle of The Sandman. Jurassic World Rebirth opened last weekend, Superman opens this weekend, and The Fantastic Four movie won't be far behind. Murderbot, Foundation, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds...I could go on.
And that's just July. Now, new trailers give us an idea of what we might be watching in August, starting with a look at the second season of Twisted Metal, coming to Peacock on July 31. Take a look below:
Turning video games into movies and TV shows is all the rage lately, but Sony's Twisted Metal games, wherein players roll around in souped-up death mobiles trying to knock each other off the road, always seemed like an odd choice. But the trailer looks pretty fun!
Anthony Mackie will return as John Doe, who gets the opportunity to compete in a tournament hosted by the mysterious Calypso (Anthony Carrigan). Characters like Sweet Tooth, the murderous clown who drives an ice cream truck, return, again voiced by Will Arnett and played physically by Joe Seanoa. Newcomers include Axel (Michael James Shaw), who drives around with his arms stuck in giant wheels. Tell me this doesn't look entertaining.
Watch the trailer for Red Sonja
Continuing the dumb fun, Samuel Goldwyn Films just released a trailer for Red Sonja, a reboot of the 1985 original starring Brigitte Nielsen as a medieval warrior who kicks ass, takes names, and wears very impractical armor. "Captured. Chained. Forced to fight for survival," reads the movie's logline. "Red Sonja must battle her way through the blood-soaked pits of a tyrant’s empire and rally an army of outcasts to reclaim her freedom and take down Dragan and his ruthless bride, Dark Annisia." Watch the trailer below:
Once again, this looks like silly, stupid fun; it's not gonna win any Peabody awards but looks like a pulpy good time. Red Sonja comes out in theaters on August 15 and will be available for streaming on August 29.
This time around, the role of Red Sonja will be played by Revenge star Matilda Lutz. The character was originally created in 1973 as a kind of answer to Conan the Barbarian, with whom she was often paired in comics. The trailer makes a joke about Red Sonja's famous chainmail bikini. Does pointing out the fact that it's silly and offers to protection make it any less ludicrous? Audiences will decide next month.
Did you know there's a My Neighbor Totoro stage play?
I don't feel good leaving you with only two trailers — the rule of threes must be obeyed — so I cast around the internet looking for something else and came upon this: a trailer for a stage production of My Neighbor Totoro, the classic Studio Ghibli movie about a young girl who befriends a friendly forest spirit near her home:
I had no idea this existed, but apparently it's already won multiple Olivier Awards and is hailed for its impressive use of puppetry. It's currently playing at the Gillian Lynne Theatre in London through March of 2026, and if I lived anywhere remotely in the vicinity, I would probably check it out.
