While we all know author Alan Moore will never like adaptations of his beloved works, if he acknowledges their existence at all, I think if he were to give them a go, he’d be most impressed by the new animated Watchmen films, based on his classic superhero graphic novel.
Brandon Vietti's Watchmen: Chapter I was released in August to great critical acclaim. The film was a perfect adaptation of the first half of the much-loved graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Even more faithful, perhaps, than Zack Snyder’s popular live-action adaptation in 2009. In addition, the animation (which is very reminiscent of Telltale games) perfectly suits the story; the team were able to absolutely nail the signature aesthetic of the graphic novel. It really is a feast for the eyes!
But of course, Chapter I only covered the first half of the source material. By the end of the film, Doctor Manhattan fled Earth to settle on Mars following allegations that his presence gives people cancer. Plus, Rorschach’s meddling into the mysterious death of The Comedian has seen him framed of a crime and put behind bars.
Looking ahead to the next movie, we will learn more about the killer of vigilantes who’s currently evading our protagonists and keeping the Doomsday Clock ticking away. Rorschach, as we know, doesn’t play by the rules — and life in prison is as much a punishment for those holding him as it is for himself. And Doctor Manhattan, well, he gets up to his own things on Mars. Check out the trailer:
Warner. Bros has set a release date of November 26 for the next installment, which will be available to watch on demand at places like Prime Video, Apple TV+, and Fandango. Mark your calendars, folks! The two movies are also seeing a physical release, too. You can pick up Watchmen Chapters 1 & 2 on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on December 3.
If you haven’t watched Chapter 1 yet, I implore you to do so. It’s so, so good.
