It's almost been one year since Prime Video shocked the world and canceled The Wheel of Time after three seasons.
Laia Costa, who starred as Moghedien, one of the Forsaken, in The Wheel of Time, revisited the show's shocking cancellation in an interview with Cinemania. The interview was in Spanish, but we've translated parts of the interview to English.
"We were all really sad," Costa says in the clip. "We didn’t expect it, especially since the third season was great."
Costa captured the sentiment of many Wheel of Time fans, myself included. It was a shocking cancellation despite the viewership not necessarily growing as fast as Prime Video was hoping. It's just sad that it ended the way that it did right in the middle in the most epic parts of Robert Jordan's book series.
The Wheel of Time premiered on Prime Video to decent ratings back in 2021. Adapting such a sprawling, epic story in eight-episode seasons posed problems for Rafe Judkins and co. After some pointed criticism early in the series, the second and third seasons were much better than the first. The creative team and cast clearly found their rhythm and delivered an excellent final product with excellent momentum heading into the fourth season with the emergence of the Forsaken and Rand finally accessing the full slate of his power as the Dragon Reborn.
"Moghedien was a character I loved playing and was excited to continue playing," Costa continued.
Moghedien is one of the most interesting characters in the entire series, so I also share Costa's sadness in not getting to see the character at their full potential, which was poised to happen later in the series.
One year after The Wheel of Time's cancellation, it's hard to make sense of what feels like a massive mistake and shortsighted move at Prime Video. You have a series that's only getting stronger from a story perspective, and you're going to cancel it when we're just entering a new age of interest in fantasy shows, movies, and books post-Game of Thrones?
By the end of its run, The Wheel of Time had a chance to be one of the most beloved fantasy TV shows of all time, based on where the story was heading. I'm not saying it was going to be as popular as Game of Thrones, but there were so many big battles and events to come. It could have definitely appealed more to the masses after that third season. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we'll ever see that happen.
There have been multiple fan campaigns ongoing in the year since the show's cancellation. Stars of the series have continued to bang the drum for the show, but it's going to take a herculean effort to bring this show back from the dead given the high production costs, contracts, and other fees. Sadly, it does feel like the end of the road, though other fans have not lost hope.
You can watch the first three seasons of The Wheel of Time on Prime Video now.
