The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 is here, and it thrusts our favorite characters back into world-saving action...well, most of them anyway. The team remains separated in the first couple of episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina season 4, and Scanlan is wholly absent. But Prime Video's fantasy series makes sure to bring in a new addition in his stead, and he's just as hilarious (though a lot less competent). SPOILERS ahead for The Legend of Vox Machina season 4, Episodes 1-3.
I'm, of course, referring to Taryon Darrington, the newest self-proclaimed member of Vox Machina. The team is hardly speaking when season 4 opens, much less recruiting. That doesn't stop Taryon from wedging his way into the group, however, first by tempting them with a new adventure — and then by following them until he proves potentially useful. Three episodes in, he's becoming a regular presence. This may leave fans wondering who's voicing the character and why it's not the same person from Critical Role Campaign 1.

Who is Taryon Darrington? The Legend of Vox Machina's newest "hero" explained
Taryon Darrington makes his entrance in The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 Episode 1, quite literally crashing into the tavern where Pike and Grog are drinking. He's a fan who wants to have adventures of his own, and he hopes to write about them as an author...hence the creepy robot he uses to record his "daring exploits."
The Legend of Vox Machina's new character is the wealthy son of a merchant who owns "an incredibly profitable gem concern." That's how he ends up traveling with Pike and Grog, whom he recruits to deal with intercepted deliveries. As they hunt down the thieves behind these raids, they find themselves face to face with a far more sinister threat: an undead priestess of the Everlight.
Once their showdown with her is over, Pike and Grog send Taryon to deliver a message about their situation to Percy and Vex'ahlia. He also follows them to Keyleth's coronation, proving impossible to get rid of. His magic gems come in handy in a pinch, however, and his knowledge may give them a lead on the Whispered One and his cultists.

Who voices Taryon Darrington in The Legend of Vox Machina season 4
Taryon Darrington provides The Legend of Vox Machina with comic relief, and this only works because of his hilarious lines and their impressive delivery. It's a good thing the Prime Video series has a skilled voice actor in the role. For those wondering who portrays the newcomer, that honor goes to Wayne Brady.
Brady has quite a few voice-acting credits to his name. Viewers may recognize some of his roles, including King Dice from The Cuphead Show!, Clover in Disney's Sofia the First, and Harold McBride in The Loud House. His performance in The Legend of Vox Machina could become one of his biggest, especially since he's already doing a great job with Taryon Darrington. It's a relief, especially since he isn't the one who voiced the character in the Critical Role campaign the show is based on.

Why Sam Riegel doesn't voice Taryon Darrington in the Prime Video show
Wayne Brady is now the voice of Taryon Darrington in The Legend of Vox Machina, but Sam Riegel — the actor behind Scanlan — is the one who played the character in the Critical Role campaign. Riegel has history with Brady, thanks to their time working on Sofia the First. In an interview with Screen Rant, Riegel noted that this experience, along with his impressive career, made him a prime candidate to take over the role.
"We've known Wayne Brady for years," Riegel explained. "I got to work with him on Sophia the First, and Travis [Willingham] was in Sophia the First with Wayne Brady, and he's been a bud. Also, we've been fans of his for decades now. So when it came time to cast the role of Taryon Darrington, we were making our dream list of candidates, and he was top of the list. He has everything the character needs. He is funny, he can sing. He already loved the show."
Riegel didn't get specific about why they looked for someone else, but it's likely because having him voice two prominent characters would be jarring for the show (despite it working for the D&D campaign). The original star and the Critical Role crew are happy with the results, and fans likely will be as well. Brady knocks it out of the park with his new character, stealing many of the scenes he's in.
The Legend of Vox Machina drops new episodes Wednesdays on Prime Video.
