Yes, that was King Robert Baratheon from Game of Thrones on Dune: Prophecy
By Dan Selcke
Last night's new episode of Dune: Prophecy, "Sisterhood Above All," spent most of its time in flashbacks, as we saw how sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen came to join the Bene Gesserit sisterhood. We also got to know their extended family, including their uncle Evgeny Harkonnen, the family patriarch who becomes embittered and cold (well, colder) after the murder of his nephew Griffin, a promising young man on whom Evgeny was depending to pull House Harkonnen out of obscurity.
If you're a Game of Thrones fan, you might have thought you recognized Evgeny from somewhere. He's played by Mark Addy, the same actor who played the brash King Robert Baratheon in the first season of the show. King Robert may have died before the end of the first season, but fans remembered him for his brusque personality, and he was at the center of a million memes. Somewhere, Lancel is still looking for that breastplate stretcher.
You can see a bit of King Robert in Evgeny Harkonnen; they're both powerful men who can be openly combative. Mark Addy was a great choice for the role.
At the end of the episode, once the flashback ends and we return to the present, we find that Evgeny is still alive all these years later, albeit on the edge of death and only able to get around with the help of a levitating scooter. That last part kind of recalls the way Baron Vladimir Harkonnen will fly around using suspensors thousands of years in the future in the original Dune story, so maybe that idea runs in the family.
House of the Dragon star Archie Barnes shows up in Dune: Prophecy
Mark Addy wasn't the only denizen of the Game of Thrones universe to show up in "Sisterhood Above All." Fans of House of the Dragon may have recognized Archie Barnes, who played the young-but-tough Oscar Tully in the show's second season. Barnes showed up here as Albert Atreides, the youngest member of the clan and the only one to survive a brutal massacre.
I mentioned earlier that Evgeny Atreides grew cold and bitter after the death of his nephew Griffin. Well, Griffin's sisters Tula and Valya are none too happy about it either. Valya becomes the engine behind a revenge plot against Vorian Atreides, who killed Griffin (which is more or less what happens in the Dune prequel novels by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, FYI). Tula couples up with Orry Atreides, gets herself invited to an Atreides family gathering, and then poisons everyone there. Having committed enough atrocities for one day, she spares the young Albert.
This all happens decades before the plot of the main show, so we probably won't see Archie Barnes back as Albert. If Albert is still alive, he'll be much older and played by someone else. But you never know. To be sure, you can check out new episodes of Dune: Prophecy on Sunday nights on HBO and Max.
