  • Fuck… This is the first time we’ve seen the Iron Throne this season. And this makes me think… We’ve never seen Robert sitting on the Throne!

  • I like that these pictures are all people sitting in chairs glaring at people…basically. Looking forward to the trial!

  • When is the Curtain Call for Burn Gorman coming? Oh and Noah Taylor should get one too, although he was never a focking legend like Karl.

  • jentario:

We just saw the throne last episode, when Tommen was crowned.

  • jentario,

Good call. And I think that’s kind of symbolic, in that Robert never took ruling seriously and left matters to the Hand and Small Council while he whored and drank himself to an early grave.

  • jentario:

    Last week for tommend coronation?

  • Whoa Tycho, you’re looking a little ruff there. You really ought to put on your hat!

I wonder who those three seated at the far right (or left) of the throne room are meant to be? Cersei’s other witnesses perhaps? They look a bit like Kevan, Olenna & Pycelle from a distance, but clearly aren’t with the zoom on.

  • Valyrian Plastic,

one is most probably Qyburn… but PLEASE can Ser Kevan be returning, personally i think he’s essential to the future KL plot

EDIT- upon greater inspection of the trio none of the gentlemen i recognise (although the one on the left does look a little like ser kevan…) the fatter, bearded one on the right we have never seen before (so not pycelle or qyburn) and even the lady in the middle doesn’t look much like Olenna. If it wasn’t for her clothes i’d guess it was just an extra. but in ep4 didn’t she say she was leaving KL for highgarden? so why is she still here for the trial (plus i think i got a glimpse of her at tommen’s coronation) i’m confused…?

  • Karl Tanner:

One for Karl, Rast and Locke would be cool.

  • Am I’m the only one not impressed with Peter Dinklage acting this season, he still look like the same Saint Tyrion I remember from season 1, and it’s like nothing happened to him. No transformation, he doesn’t look like someone worried about his current predicament nor feel shit for getting fucked again by his family.

  • DatBastardSnow:

We’ve only had a couple scenes with him so far since Joffrey’s demise, and if I remember correctly in the books, he doesn’t really start to go off the deep end until the events of the trial take place. I really liked his line with Jamie “Cersei won’t rest until she has my head on a spike”. Well played.

  • Karl Tanner,

Actually, we probably should get a curtain call for Diana Rigg too.
No, the Queen of Thorns is still alive in the story, but I suspect we’ve seen the last of her, sad to say.

  • Chris,

look carefully at the trio on the left of the first picture… it looks like the Queen of Thorns… but i’m not entirely sure

  • Ser Davos Seaworth,

It definitely isn’t her – dressed similarly, but the woman there is about 50 years younger by the looks of her.

Is the one on the right of the three the High Septon perchance?

  • Sid,

    Sid,

Not a fan of that scene, the way he said it sounded like he was joking. I’m still hopeful that he will turn to a darker Tyrion later on, coz right now BIG SPOILER:Tyrion killing Tywin would look too random and unconvincing.

  • Azzy Mahmood,

i’m still 50:50 on whether that’s olenna or not, although i hope it’s her because she’s awesome. i’m pretty sure that isn’t the high septon, the high septon seemed quite graceful whist this guy looks like a fat oath (similar to Lord Mace Tyrell)

  • Lol, remember all the idiots who thought they saw Sansa in the throne room during this scene in the trailer? I’d say this would teach them to freak out a little less in the future, but we all know this fanbase.

  • I love Tycho’s chair–copper! Never fear–they still may give him the hat. He wouldn’t wear it inside after all, would he? ;)

And I can’t say enough about the Meereen set. Absolutely gorgeous!

I have faith that Peter can deliver those awesome lines from the trial. This is gonna be a good one. In BCog we trust!

  • jwal,

He’s actually wearing different suits in the same style. Same as everybody else; Tywin, Tyrion, Cersei…

  • Sid,

His downfall is mainly unrealized (but growing) tension for a while until his escape scene. Everything happening right now is just building up inside of him until he just lets everything go and goes on his killing spree, tells Jaime he murdered Joffrey, etc.

So most likely you won’t see that noticeable of a change until episode 9 or 10.

  • Lots of people sitting in episode 6 (the Red Viper gonna have some alteration).

From big and hard chairs come hard asses. From hard asses come power.

  • Oh man, Tywin is sitting on the effing Iron Throne. Wonder if they’ll ever get him to budge from it…

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5s_LOraW24 this seems like an awfully cramped episode… the trial should be at least 50% (just like the wedding was 50% of episode 2), but the dreadfort attack and visiting braavos should have completed this episode… am i the only one who’s thinking they’re adding dany for the sake of it? I mean what is she going to do? discuss mercy or justice again? she is quickly becoming the new joffrey in my eyes, her scenes are becoming extremely annoying. With ep2 and ep9 danyless i don’t think HBO could give D&D permission to omit dany from anymore episodes, because ‘Calesy’ is everyone’s favourite.

  • Ser Davos Seaworth,

It could also be part of her contract, that she can’t appear in less than 8 episodes.

But in any case, this is likely the episode where Drogon eats the child, so that should give her something to do.

  • Ser Davos Seaworth,

Ehm… you see that dragon? And that guy arriving at her throne room? Yeah, this episode is gonna be relevant for Dany. Like the second most important event concerning her, after the taking of Meereen.

  • Ser Davos: the trial will be certainly split in three episodes: it begins on e6, then #7 will almost certainly end with as your champion and look at the title for #8.

  • Why are some people asking why Tycho Nestoris isn’t wearing a hat?? It’s been a while since I read the books but, please remind me, does he wear one alot in the books?

  • cosca,
you’re probably right that it is a clause in her contract.
    Luka Nieto,
and both of you. i saw the dragon, but isn’t it too early for that scene? without the shaveplate, reznak ex. cast she has literally nothing else to do this season, apart from banishing ser jorah, which should only be one scene in the finale maybe they’ll include hizdahr earlier than he appears in the books or something…?

  • Arkash,

Soooooo, we’re getting NO Starks, NO BriPod & NO Wall.

Yay! It’s gonna be one of those episodes :D. The trial could be 15-20 minutes non-stop but with Cogman at the helm it’ll be good. We’re also getting the witnesses out-of-context confessionals too it would seem. Maybe 5-10 minutes with Team Stannis, 5 with Dany, 5-10 of other KL scenes and 10 at the Dreadfort?

  • DatBastardSnow:
Am I’m the only one not impressed with Peter Dinklage acting this season, he still look like the same Saint Tyrion I remember from season 1, and it’s like nothing happened to him. No transformation, he doesn’t look like someone worried about his current predicament nor feel shit for getting fucked again by his family.

That’s going to change this episode.

  • Ser Davos Seaworth,

It’s not like Shavepate and Reznak really do much. They’ve got Hizdahr, that should be enough on the Meereenese side for now. Then you’ve got Jorah’s banishment, Daario stuff, and the dragons being chained. That’s enough for 3 or 4 episodes (no word on whether Dany is in episode 8, though she probably is)

  • Looks like all of Dany’s first ADWD chapter could fit this episode: Sons of the Harpy mention, holding court (Astapor ambassador, woman who lost house, wineseller’s daughter (?), little boy, Hizdahr, then goatherder to end)

  • A lot of you act as if Danny scenes have been very long this season. She gets at least 3 minutes and the blaming of D&D is ridiculous by now when GRRM is that one that came up with her storyline. You should be thankful they are speeding her story

“Look at me, I’m going to join the Dany Cry fest group because I’m a fan of other characters that are more darker so I’m going to follow the crowd and bitch and cry whenever she is on screen because she thinks she is mighty but not Tywin, he is a boss so he can act like a dick and it’s cool”

I remember that mess. People need to stop thinking D&D are going to make huge changes. Why would they leave Sansa in KL? That would put the story entirely off the rails. Just because they change small things or put in additional plots doesn’t mean they’re going to ever go off and change the big things.

I’m still seeing people doubting that they’re going to have Tyrion kill Tywin because Tyrion is ‘whitewashed.’ I guarantee it’s happening.

  • No more Olenna? Is that confirmed? Don’t we see her at the next wedding and making smart ass remarks about olfactory grievances at a certain someone’s funeral?

  • JJT,

And? Do you want to be the one to tell Oberyn fucking Martell that he can’t wear his favourite clothes as often as he damn well pleases? :D

All jokes aside, I agree that giving the characters more different clothes to wear is one of the few things that GoT really could work on.
It’s still believable that the characters in the show (even the noble ones) wouldn’t change there style as often as in a contemporary show
(clothes, especially exquisite ones, were very expansive back in the day), but it wouldn’t hurt, if the nobles in Kings Landing would get 2-4 different outfits per season.

  • King Stannis,

Yeah. Dany isn’t even my favorite character, but the hate is way over the top and only seems to get worse every year.

I’m starting to hope she takes the IT and wins everything in the end because the Dany hater tears will be so entertaining and delicious.

  • Are we ever going to get a curtain call for the 3 actors we said goodbye to last Sunday? It would be good to see some opinions on all of them laid out.

  • Definitely the High Septon in one of the 3 seats- no idea who the other 2 are but one looks like a Septa

  • Please, can we finally have Oberyn referred to as The Red Viper in the show? He’ll be dead in 3 episodes and they have yet to call him by his nickname. How is the title of episode 8, ‘The Viper And The Mountain’, going to make sense without calling him ‘The Red Viper’? I consider it a big oversight that the nickname wasn’t mentioned by Tyrion in the premier.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap:

Did they ever call Lady Olenna the Queen of Thorns in the show?

  • if i were Dany and i had a throne room like the 1 in Mereen i wudnt wanna go back to that shit hole kingslanding either ….

  • Sansa’s Knight:
if i were Dany and i had a throne room like the 1 in Mereen i wudnt wanna go back to that shit hole kingslanding either ….

This is what I’ve been saying all along. Westeros is nothing more than some magical ideal home that she was denied her whole life. Its an illusion. Its not her dream, its her brothers dream

  • Interior Bannisters,

I believe they did once. But come to think of it, they may not have. What do the writers have against great nicknames? I understand not calling them those names to their face, but the conversation between Tyrion,Pod, and Bronn seemed a perfect time for the RV nickname to be mentioned. At this point I assume Tyrion will bring it up in his conversation with Oberyn in episode 7.

  • Ser Davos Seaworth,

In the books when she holds court in Mereen she’s advised to wear the regalia of the ruling elite, which is a complicated ‘toga’ style garment, which she hates. She calls it her ‘floppy ears’ because she’s told (I can’t remember by whom) that “If a man wants to be king of the rabbits, he better get himself a pair of floppy ears.”

  • I really like the pic of Mark Gatiss. Tycho himself is modestly dressed, but the chair, the chair exhales power and authority. Fitting with Tywin’s line about the people of the Iron Bank being nothing but bricks in the wall, replacable.

  • King Stannis:

Thing is Daenerys is quite dark, she also has more than a little of the Targaryen insanity(like enjoying putting people on crosses/burning them to death(no matter how justified it is, normal people doesn’t derive pleasure from it). It’s just that Emilia Clarke can’t act. I mean seriously, she can’t do Daenerys justice in any way. She could do her timid side in season 1 well, because looking cute and sad isn’t hard. However her harder darker side turns into MAH DRAGONS and overenunciating every single word.

  • Started to get into TURN because I spotted Burn Gorman’s name in the credits. Funny to see the contrast. A well spoken English Officer versus the fookin’ legend who grew up in Gin Alley. Can only imagine what Karl would say about the TURN character. “You look like a fookin’ ball sack, ugly looking stoopid cunt-face.”

  • Macharius,

It boggles my mind who somebody can say an actress who landed a leading role in the hottest shit on TV right now and has already won awards in her very young career “can’t act”. She obviously can. Do you don’t like her acting? Well, fair enough, but many people, who judge acting for living (her drama teachers, casting directors etc.) apparently did like it…

I think Emilia fine. She was great in Season 1 and Season 3. Season 2 she was pretty bad but everything about Qarth was just bad and mishandled. I will say though, it has been a LONG LONG time since Dany has had a proper character scene which isn’t an epic speech or some meeting that ends in a cheesy expression such as “I will do what Queens Do, I will Rule” But I think shes great. Shes not “Lena Headey” brilliant, but shes good.

  • Interior Bannisters,

I agree. She has aced much of what the writers offered her, but usually that comes down to epic speeches and angry one liners. It’s good that we are finally laying low with Dany again and seeing her softer side, this should test Emilia’s acting skills again. Especially if this episode is what we think it is.

Im gonna quote Dan and David

Emilia [Clarke] has done a lot of really impressive work this year and things take a darker turn for her. We’re going to see how she deals with a kind of adversity that’s more troublesome than in the past. She’s facing problems that can’t be solved with armies or dragons. Emilia has to go to some places where she hasn’t gone before with this character, and she’s done them so powerfully and seemingly effortlessly that I think people are going to be moved by the results.

Yea, they might just be promoting her, but this gives me hope that they have written some great character scenes for her She could have some really solid emotional moments, especially with Jorah

  • So based on the recap it looks like Meryn Trant will be one of those who who testify. I’m happy Ian Beattie is getting some more to do :)

    andy smith,

Doesn’t look like Paul Bentley as the High Septon to me :/

  • Andrew,

Those are all the alternative synopses. (i.e. Dany in 4×07 says she mulls giving Daario a longer leash, instead of “Daario entreats Dany to allow him to do what he does best”)

Hopefully we get another for Episode 8, especially since we usually hear about no less than 3 storylines..

  • DatBastardSnow:

I don’t know what scenes you’ve been watching. Between the only two scenes we’ve seen of him in prison there was a pretty stark difference. He was more hopeless and depressed in his scene with Jaime, which of course is important transition for more dramatic changes throughout the season. And yeah, he’s not at the emotional state he needs to be in at the end of the season, but that’s good, it means his character arc will have some progression!

  • Hodor Targaryen: I don’t know what scenes you’ve been watching. Between the only two scenes we’ve seen of him in prison there was a pretty stark difference. I feel like Tyrion is such a deep rich character that it might not be altogether possible for a TV show to depict that. Yes, Tyrion is intelligent and witty and quite noble, but he is also jealous, depraved, slightly cruel, and more than anything depressingly and tragically lonely. Maybe after the events of this season, those other characteristics will be shown

  • Carne: So based on the recap it looks like Meryn Trant will be one of those who who testify. I’m happy Ian Beattie is getting some more to do :)

I just thought up this theory about how his contribution will pan out. Because he takes on Boros’ role in beating Sansa in the Throne Room, and Jaime being present apparently as Tyrion’s councilor in the trial (footage speculation), when Tyrion reveals the root of his threat, Jaime will demand Meryn tells the truth about the beatings, leading him to later be demoted to Royal food taster. Yum. Nothing massive really.

  • Andrew,

Well how about that. This gels with what we saw in the “weapons and training” video. In that there was a shot of Ygritte with a spear and other wildlings moving between thatched roof buildings. This shot played out on a monitor that said episode 408 on it. So the raid on Mole’s Town will be then.

  • THIS “Emilia can’t act” thing is really becoming tiresome, but I suppose it isn’t worth worrying about as the evidence to the contrary is on the screen to see. Much more important is hoping the blue outfit has been burned, that photo is not too clear? Just watched the preview, still some damn blue!

  • paul,

They combined it with the white outfit. Already much better, and we have seen an even more stripped down dress in the trailers that looks completely different. So we are at least done with the jeans and boots and cape (thank god).

  • Greenjones,

Hmm… It seems he got “hints” and knows “a little bit”. It’s not like they have him every major event but I guess he might know who sits the Throne.

  • I always wondered why there were no 7 judges. You’ve got 7 up to your nose: 7 kingdoms, the 7, 7 kingsguards 7 pointed star etc. Yet when it comes to this it’s three judges? Sacrilege! Not sure what Martin was thinking :P Love the pic with Lena in it. She looks rather melancholic, no?

    Ashara D:
I love Tycho’s chair–copper! Never fear–they still may give him the hat. He wouldn’t wear it inside after all, would he? ;)

You made me laugh!!! I think they won’t though. Poster Macharius above noted something that fits Tywin’s description of the bankers: bland, replaceable, a brick in a wall, just another cog in the wheel of IBB. That cute little hat might distinguish him somewhat. And it will go against the image they are trying to create.

But I root for the silly hat! I did the same for Coldhands… #BookCanonFTW

  • Interior Bannisters,

I think the problem that many people (including myself) have, is that Emilia Clarke keeps being awarded for her acting whereas Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Charles Dance, Alfie Allen, etc. don’t even get nominations, which is quite unfair in comparision because it’s not too hard to see that the ones I’ve listed can outact Emilia in so many aspects (facial expressions, voice controll, …).

  • SM4e,

That doesn’t mean Emilia is bad. If anyone is to blame, it’s the people that nominate for award shows. They always pick the obvious ones (Dany and Tyrion) instead of the slightly smaller roles that do the best acting (in season 3- Jaime and Catelym). Emilia has been doing a good job- not as good a job as Michelle Fairley, but that’s a pretty high bar to reach and hardly anyone in the casts can do that.

  • Ive pretty much accepted the fact that Peter will be the only guy nominated every season
And Lena is a total shoe-in to win when she has the walk of shame.

  • andy smith,

You are kidding, right? They look nothing alike. Like… at all. They even have completely and obviously different facial hair.

  • Tatters:
    SM4e,

Emilia has the strongest material, its that simple.

Honestly Emilia’s dracarys scene was my favorite female performance other than Michelle at the Red Wedding. Unfortunately, Michelle had like ZERO screentime other than that episode. I am rereading the books, and I realized that Cat has THE MOST POV chapters of any female up until then.

  • The bland (but good quality) clothing with the frilled collar of Tycho Nestoris reminds me of the Dutch bankers of the Protestant Reformation. Thoughts?

  • DatBastardSnow,

I wouldn’t go so far as to suggest that the dwarf is sleep walking through his role this season, but .. it’s seems that his range is better limited to quips and one-liners, it’s his forte and D&D should push that angle hard.

  • SM4e,

I agree – I don’t think Emilia is bad, in fact sometimes she’s very good, but she just isn’t one of the best actors in the show. But then its not really fair on her as GoT has such an amazing cast.

  • Macharius: Thing is Daenerys is quite dark, she also has more than a little of the Targaryen insanity(like enjoying putting people on crosses/burning them to death(no matter how justified it is, normal people doesn’t derive pleasure from it). Agreed, both the dwarf and the surrogate dragon mommy have reached the limits of their respective acting ranges. Unfortunate, but bound to happen in the show this long.

  • Abyss:

Emilia wasn’t the first choice for the role; she’s definitely part of the “B” team. She’s so wooden it’s almost as if George Lucas were directing her.

  • Interior Bannisters,

Yes but we got a lot of Robb and Talisa in the show, and Bolton instead of Frey. Its a fair measure.
But i think Emilia will glow in these episodes, so many emotions involved, it shouldnt be hard. It is good they take care of her, the storyline is vetted with great care and need proper justice. No more rushing in that corner of the show.

  • somuchforoldtown: Emilia wasn’t the first choice for the role; she’s definitely part of the “B” team.

she didn’t audition for the role initially
They first cast Tazmin Merchant, then for some reason, it didn’t work out after they filmed the test pilot
    They found Emilia afterwards.
    Michelle Fairley also

  • somuchforoldtown,

I dont know how one can put a limit on acting range. Its all about the emotions involved in the making of it, and we know these are changing.
Arya most of all, but Dany, Tyrion and Jon too. Reek is more shocking and abrupt which Allen has a lot of fun with.

  • somuchforoldtown,

It wouldn’t matter if she were the tenth choice for the role. To say that she can’t act would be ridiculous regardless. – Oh, and just as a reminder, Michelle Fairley wasn’t the first choice for Catelyn either, surely that must mean that she is “part of the “B” team”…
Well, and the last sentence is just an insult, so I’ll not comment on it, if you don’t mind…

  • Ozymandias,

A guy on reddit posted that. It looks legit but I wonder what his source was. He hasn’t answered and questions about it yet.

  • >Am I’m the only one not impressed with Peter Dinklage acting this season

One can only hope, since he has done some of his best work of the series.

  • Ozymandias,

Well, not news for book readers. It’ll follow the books. This really needed to happen for her, Tywin’s and Tyrion’s next scene together to make sense.

  • Ozymandias,

Not looking not looking not looking

And let’s shit up about Emilia who is doing a good job so far and is finally getting an opportunity to do some quieter, more emotional scenes. Once the season is over, say what you want to say- so far she hasn’t done anything to deserve this bullshit. The fact that a select few who hate Dany and take it out on Emilia exist does not make her a bad actress. She is a really good Dany (especially in season 1, where she had the most testing material).

  • Ozymandias,

There is nothing to blame. She is now headed for more varied material (yes, for all the hate towards the Meereen arc, it does develop Dany’s character a lot).

  • jentario,

Agree. I too figured some people transferred their hatred for Dany to Emilia. Myself i love both Daenerys and Emilias portrayal of her. But they need to show dat KISS already!

  • MUGger,

Good point, maybe this is yet to come, but if not I hope Dany does still end up wearing the tokar (floppy ears), as it’s so symbolic of the restrictions & compromises she has to make in Meereen & how she’s ultimately unable to belong there.

  • somuchforoldtown,

Ugh, what a nasty comment. I’m glad I don’t have to be around you in real life…Jealousy, perhaps?

Dinklage sometimes seems frustrated that he is not given more space to act, as in the first two seasons, and when he is “underpresent” he comes across as slightly jaded (it’s also the NY/NJ style). But when he gets his gusto and longer scenes, he is brilliant. More Dinklage is needed, not less!

As for Emilia, I don’t know how she would perform other parts, but she is a very plausible Daenerys; she has grown into that particular part, with both the determination and the naivete.

  • King Stannis,

This show asks people to take sides and that’s what’s so cool about it. I don’t think people have realized the significance yet of the grandness of the throne room in Meereen where the court intrigue and political stuff in the story will eventually shift. I wonder if this is one of the reasons Dany’s story has been brought forward. Also because not that much happens to her between Season One and the upcoming Season Five and beyond. So far all the emphasis has been placed on Kings Landing but it’s being slowly revealed how things there are crumbling and with the major threat from the North yet to come…who knows how much longer the current family/families will rule? All this is conjecture but you can see the writing on the wall. (Wall?)

  • jentario,

Yes, and shifts the political goings-on to Meereen and less on Kings Landing, which is appearing more and more doomed (royal assassination, crown deep in debt, threat coming from the North and being disregarded as nothing by the man in charge (Tywin). The rot is really beginning to show there. Personally, I cannot wait for the emphasis to be taken away from K.L. and placed elsewhere. *rubs hands in glee*
