3. Daenerys’ Woven Gown

This is my personal favorite of the Dany gowns in Season 5. The silhouette of this gown ties back to the silhouettes Dany was sporting just a season ago, with the pleated skirt insert to the stiffer outer skirt layer. But having dropped the blue that once visually defined the inner and outer layers of her gowns, there was a need to have something there. For this gown, the designers chose a woven look that mimicked dragon scales all the way down the shoulderless built-in cape. In short, this is the only dress that still recalls who Dany was before she sat down to rule Meereen, and it’s no accident that she wears it in every scene where she refuses to open the fighting pits, and when she tells Tyrion how she will break the wheel. This is also the only gown she has with built-in metal accessories—the bar that formed the keyhole here is metal instead of fabric, and stands out.
