Girona continues to be a hotbed of Game of Thrones activity. Over this past week, we’ve had video of Maisie Williams’ stunt double taking flying leaps, members of the Faith Militant wandering the streets, the production building a set for what appears to be the play Arya performs in The Winds of Winter, and extras as far as the eye can see. Today, we’ve got a few news bits of information, some of which involve the waif, Arya’s none-too-pleasant coworker from the House of Black and White.
That’s actress Faye Marsay, who plays the waif (or “la Niña Abandonada”) in the black shift and the blue hoodie. Presumably she’ll lose the hoodie for her scenes. Los Siete Reinos reports that the production filmed a scene that involved Arya, still blind, begging in the streets. The waif arrives and starts smacking Arya with a stick, which you’ll remember from last season is a standard House of Black and White training technique. According to the report, the waif leaves with a smile on her face, because the waif is kind of mean.
Of course, this being a scene with the Faceless Men, the waif probably isn’t actually the waif, and may well have been a big burly longshoreman only moments before, but we’ll leave those kind of tricky identity issues for when the season starts to air. X-Files and Walking Dead director Daniel Sackheim was directing the scene, so expect it to turn up in the third or fourth episode of Season 6.
Before moving on to other subjects, it’s also worth noting that Los Siete Reinos mentions that, in addition to standing in for Braavos and King’s Landing, at least one scene in Girona will involve the Tarlys. Considering that Sam Tarly was headed for Oldtown the last we saw, does this mean that Girona will also stand in for Oldtown? Girona is one flexible city.
Next, Diari de Girona has news about a huge scene involving 500 extras to be filmed on the steps of Girona’s Cathedral of Saint Mary, pictured above. Reportedly, the scene involves a main character who will ride a horse on these steps, while a crowd of soldiers and citizens looks on. The newspaper ventures that the main character might be Daenerys, as she’ll be hanging around a lot of horses after getting picked up by the khalasar at the end of Season 5, and that she’ll be calling her followers to arms.
Finally, as always, Diari de Girona has a wonderful gallery full of images of the filming process. Here’s one more of Faye Marsay dressed as the waif…
