Peñíscola Revealed to be Standing In for Meereen (Update: more pics!)
By Ani Bundel
The show tried so hard to keep things under wraps for the third leg of filming in Spain. The last few days have been full of frustrated reporters complaining how the extras won’t tell them what sort of costumes they’re wearing to let us know which location we’re in. But sometimes it’s not about asking people. It’s just about reading the side of the set piece.
These shots come from the set currently being installing in the Plaza Santa Maria in Peñíscola. And as we can see, the uncovered plywood board clearly shows our location—it’s the city Daenerys Targaryen abandoned to go find herself again with the Khalasar. Welcome to the town run by Tyrion and Varys: Meereen.
El Mundo has more pictures of area closures as set up continues.
And Todo Peñíscola has an entire gallery dedicated to the set up.
Prop pile!
Note the enormous amount of grain sacks behind the truck. Is this the city reserves?
This looks like a smaller version of where Dany stood to execute Mossador.
And a large water wheel! Check out their entire gallery for many more pictures.
Meanwhile, Levante-EMV warns that due to the large number of tourists expected to flood the city in the coming weeks, the residents are bracing for bad traffic and crowding due to road closures.
UPDATE: Todo Peñíscola has put even more pics up in its gallery, and you can really start to tell that the city is going be Meereen now.
This is another shot of the area that’s looking more and more like the one beneath the Great Pryamid of Meereen where Mossador was executed last year.
The weather-beaten, sandy-colored buildings really do scream Meereen, now that we’re on the lookout for it. For more, head to Todo Peñíscola.
