Liam Cunningham Promises Big Things from Game of Thrones Season 6
One of the main themes that seemed to stand out from the Game of Thrones Season 6 trailer, was that Davos Seaworth and Melisandre presumably have worked out their differences and forged some kind of alliance. Whether that alliance is borne of a need to protect the body of Jon Snow, or to rally the wildlings, or to simply help the Starks, we just don’t know know until the season begins on April 24.
To that end, TV Line sat down with the actor behind Ser Davos, Liam Cunningham, and he had some rather exciting things to say about Game of Thrones Season 6, and what we can expect from the new dynamic duo.
"He gets sucked into stuff that we’ve never seen him do before, against his better judgment. We will see him doing things that we haven’t seen him doing before."
You can see where the Melisandre alliance comes into play. Davos has always been portrayed as a no-nonsense man; a man of honor and principles. To side with Melisandre is to go against everything he holds true, within himself. Remember, he still blames the Red Priestess for the deaths of his sons, and who knows how he will react when he learns the truth of Shireen’s death. Cunningham addressed that exact point:
"Well, I mean, it has to be pursued. The reason being, dramatically the audience has been one step ahead of that because they’ve known…So I think it’s a given."
TV Line did ask about the possibility of the alliance between Davos and Melisandre, and Cunningham craftily weaved his answer, without giving too much away for Season 6:
"I’m throwing you a hypothetical situation here. There’s one or two things that’s going to happen. First of all, they are very, very strange bedfellows, as they say, but they are in a very weird situation. For two people who have an abhorrent dislike of each other, they’re both in the same boat."
Yes, Mr. Cunningham, Davos and Melisandre are the very definition of the strangest of bedfellows. And, I would say that the dislike is all on Davos’ side…but nice use of the “boat” metaphor, Onion Knight.
"We both lost Stannis. We both lost our reason for being in the show. Also, both of us have found ourselves leaning towards Jon Snow."
OOPSIE! You should have chosen much wiser, much sooner. I wonder if they are still drawn to Lord Snow? I mean, they have to be, yeah?
"She has seen something in the flames about this dude. I have found, while talking with Stannis to Jon, that this guy is a fellow traveler. He’s the real deal. He’s a good guy. He’s definitely got leadership qualities, and he has a heroic and charismatic quality to him. Davos will obviously be drawn to that kind of character. Davos isn’t a leader."
Yep, they are still drawn to him. Notice the use of the phrase “will be drawn.” You aren’t as crafty as you think you are, Ser Davos. You can read the entire TV Line interview with Liam Cunningham by clicking the link provided.
Speaking of Cunningham and interviews, the actor also spoke to the Wall Street Journal and made some bold statements about Game of Thrones Season 6, that if you’re a fan — and why wouldn’t you be? — they’ll get you all kinds of excited.
The main quote that I would like to point your attention to, is that Cunningham claims Episode 1 of Season 6 is going to have a stunner of a scene:
"Listen, there are going to be many, and they’re from the get-go, I guarantee it. You’re going to have at least one rather very large one in [episode] 1, but that’s all I’m going to tell you."
What’s this? A rather very large scene in Episode 1? What could it be? I’ll leave you to speculate, wildly. Cunningham also confirms to WSJ that he and Melisandre are brought together in Season 6 — out of necessity — and that he has never read any of the A Song of Ice and Fire books by George R.R. Martin, from which Game of Thrones was based.
Interestingly enough, Cunningham compares Davos Seaworth to that of Tom Hagen from The Godfather. Much like Tom serves as Don Vito Corleone’s consigliere, or leading advisor, Davos played the same role to Stannis. “His loyalty is unquestionable. You don’t have to give it a second thought. He’s always going to be part of the family and yet not part of the family.”
Finally, Cunningham notes that Davos is not a soldier, which is something that harkens back to the Season 6 trailer, when Davos pulls Jon Snow’s sword, Longclaw, and apologizes for what he’s about to do.
