Humor roundup: Australian commercial sums up the Game of Thrones experience, and more

Welcome to the great wide world of funny Game of Thrones stuff. First up, a clever commercial from Australian pay television company Foxtel. I think a lot of fans would agree that this accurately depicts the Game of Thrones viewing experience.

Like many first-time viewers, the guy is baffled at the beginning, when Cersei and Jaime are having incestuous sex in Winterfell. Naturally, before long he’s falling asleep watching the show on the train, circling pertinent passages in the books, and going on the internet to dive deeper into the mythology. Welcome to the club, friend.

Next, Will Mirrer has mashed together Game of Thrones and March Madness, bringing together two of America’s biggest hype machines. His epic bracket poses this question: if the characters on Game of Thrones were pit against each other in single combat, who would come on top?

Don’t agree with some of the choices? Mirrer provides explanations for every single one of these outcomes. Also, if you’d like to participate in a bracket, there’s an ASOIAF March Madness poll going round. In this poll, characters compete to see which one is the “best” character, an admittedly nebulous distinction, rather than who would best who in a fight.

Finally, a select group of employees at Office Supply company Viking Direct have taken an unused meeting room in their office and turned it into a Westeros-inspired space, complete with the following accoutrements:

  • A cardboard Iron Throne made out of cardboard swords
  • Three golden dragon eggs made out of 2,500 push pins
  • 20 acetate ‘stained glass’ windows, made up of 60 separate panels, depicting key aspects of the show’s mythology
  • 42 metres of opulent crushed velvet on the walls

It’s very elaborate. Check out a video of the team building the room…

…and then take a guided tour.

I’d never given any thought to employment at Viking Direct before today, but this makes a nice case for the company.
