HBO Celebrates Mother’s Day, Game of Thrones Style
By Ani Bundel
It’s Mother’s Day here in the United States. (The UK had their version of the holiday a few weeks ago back in March.) It’s a day for the flower shops to sell out, the brunch tables to fill up, and the matriarchs to beam over their generations of family.
But for some, Mother’s Day is the worst holiday ever in the history of things. Some lost their mothers. Some can’t have kids. And some have families that are…difficult. But nowhere are families more difficult than in Westeros, especially among the elite. To that end, HBO Now has put together a few short promos featuring a few of the show’s less functional families, both in Westeros and Essos, to remind us all that sometimes the best Mother’s Day shorts go down best with a little dark humor. (The shorts are promoting HBO’s one-month free trial of its streaming service, natch!)
A reminder on Mother’s Day that some children have a lot of work to do. Don’t be a brat indeed.
Some mothers have babies that grow too large for them to handle and have to watch them fly away. It’s hard to say goodbye to yesterday.
Okay, maybe Joffrey was right about Cersei’s “penchant for drama.” Remember kids, if your mother threatens to throw herself from the Red Keep, that doesn’t mean you have to send a raven. Unless you want to prove to her that guilt works.
But then again, some mothers live long enough to gain wisdom. Figure out which ones they are, even if they’re not actually *your* mother or grandmother, and listen. They are the ones we should be honoring on this Mother’s Day in Westeros.
