Inside the Episode: “Book of the Stranger” (Video)
By Ani Bundel
At the conclusion of every Game of Thrones episode, the production airs and then releases a spate of videos detailing the behind-the-scenes work that went into making it. These videos explore the thought process that went into the creation of particular scenes, and highlight what the writers and directors see as the key moments of the episode. Let’s check out the deep dive behind the making of “Book of the Stranger.”
As a reminder, this year George R.R. Martin has been sitting these videos tidbits out completely in order to focus on finishing The Winds of Winter. For this week’s episode, we have the main video from showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, and then two from the point of view of the actors.
We start, as always, with the Inside the Episode featurette, featuring Benioff and Weiss. They break down Sansa and Jon’s reunion, Tyrion’s deal with the Masters, and of course Dany’s burning of the khals in the Temple of the Dosh Khaleen.
Speaking of the burning of the Temple, here’s Emilia Clarke, along with Iain Glen and Michiel Huisman, discussing the same scene. Clarke is clearly over the moon about this scene. (I’ll bet having a well-styled wig back doesn’t hurt.)
Our second deep dive is with Finn Jones and Natalie Dormer, talking about Loras giving up after months of torture by the High Sparrow and his followers.
I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but do you notice the outfit Dormer is wearing in this video? She’s not in the grey rags that the Sparrows force her to wear—she’s changed into a costume that looks very much like it’s expensive royal finery…but it’s dull grey and it goes all the way up, even covering her neck. Also her hair is very severe. Are we getting a glimpse of things to come later in the season?
