Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman apologizes for comments about George R.R. Martin
On Thursday, we reported that Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead, criticized author George R.R. Martin for the way he’s let HBO handle the TV adaptation of his Song of Ice and Fire books. Here’s what Kirkman said when Rolling Stone asked him whether he would ever consider telling the The Walking Dead producers the ending to his series ahead of time:
"I would never do that. That’s the one thing I’m disappointed in George R.R. Martin for doing. He should have just been like, F**k you. You make it up now, I’ll get to mine when I’m ready."
Kirkman is referring to the fact that, once it became clear that Game of Thrones would be adapting Martin’s story faster than he was writing it, the author outlined the basic plot for the rest of his novels for the producers. Kirkman’s remarks did not go over well with Martin’s followers. Now, Kirkman has taken to Twitter and clarify what he said.
That’s a nice thing to say, and Robert Kirkman seems sincere.
Kirkman also offered some perspective on the issue:
As a huge fan of The Walking Dead comics and shows, I think Robert Kirkman and George R.R. Martin belong in completely separate categories. They write in different mediums and different genres, although both of their major projects feature armies of the undead. Still, A Song of Ice and Fire has an army of ice zombies that everyone fears and knows is coming, while The Walking Dead is all about fighting the dead but fearing the living.
There’s plenty of room for fans of both shows, and since just about everyone can now set their DVRs to record one show while watching the other, or watch them online, there really is no reason the two can’t peacefully coexist.
