Miltos Yerolemou (Syrio Forel) wants his character to return to Game of Thrones

Is there any Game of Thrones character who has loomed larger in fans’ imaginations than Syrio Forel? Arya’s dashing water dancing instructor hasn’t been on the show Season 1—he appeared to die at the hands of kingsguard Meryn Trant in “The Pointy End.” Still, he died offscreen, so rumors about his survival have persisted. Arya killed Trant in the Season 5 finale to avenge Syrio’s death, but the rumors live on.

Miltos Yerolemou, who played Forel way back when, is doing his best to keep the rumors alive. “Of course I would want to return to Game of Thrones,” the actor told Digital Spy. “People always ask me, ‘Did he really die?’ and the thing is you don’t know.”

"And I have my own theories and [Game of Thrones showrunners] Dave [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] have their own theories, and that’s the way it is."

“I don’t actually know [whether Syrio died or not] but even if I did, I wouldn’t tell you! And that’s part of the fun of it – you never know.”

I’ve never given much credence to theories that Syrio Forel somehow survived Season 1, but Season 6 did see a lot of characters return after years spent offscreen: Walder Frey, Beric Dondarrion, Thoros of Myr, Edmure Tully, Osha, and Rickon Stark all came back to the show after two seasons away. We also had one character who was literally brought back from the dead—Jon Snow—and two others whom we’d assumed were dead but who were revealed to be alive—the Hound and Benjen Stark. (Okay, so technically Benjen may be undead, but still: he’s walking and talking and a part of the show.)

In that context: yeah, maybe a comeback is possible. One popular fan theory was that Jaqen H’ghar, Arya’s Faceless Man mentor, was actually Syrio Forel in disguise. The show seemed to dispose of that theory, or at least pass over the opportunity to confirm it, when Arya left the House of Black and White in Season 6’s “No One.” But Yerolemou doesn’t think that means fans should stop believing.

"And the crazy thing about Game of Thrones – obviously it’s a series of books as well – is that the fans have created their own mythology, and the mythology is as real as the books and the TV show."

Yerolemou is currently playing the Fool in King Lear: The Film. Will he show up in Game of Thrones Season 7? Time will tell.
