The Season 6 finale of Game of Thrones was one of the most action-packed episodes in the show’s history, as the boards for the three-dimensional chess game happening all over Westeros were upended all at once. In some cases, self-styled rulers were taken out by mighty pawns, while on others, new kings and queens were crowned, or left their current board to go play on a new one. And in one case, an entire section of the board was blown to smithereens.
Audiences were left with tons of questions, mostly centered on the new alliances that would be born out of these major power plays. Would Jaime and Cersei band together and rule as brother and sister, Targaryen style? How many more families will run to join Dany as she marches across Westeros? Who is Arya’s next target, and what are the chances of her meeting up with the Brotherhoood or reuniting with her beloved half-brother/cousin and sister, the latter of whom just discovered a taste for cold blooded murder?
Speaking of that sister, many people have opinions about the inscrutable face Sansa wore as Jon Snow was declared King in the North, as her smile slowly died as she locked eyes with Littlefinger. Was she angry Jon was crowned? Was she afraid, because Jon was now at risk of becoming a target, for Littlefinger and Cersei both? Whose side would she take if it came down to Littlefinger versus Jon Snow?
I don’t think the production meant to throw gasoline on this speculation fire, but it has. Earlier this week, it put up a website for the GoT Party, where fans can vote for various characters and their “running mates” in a faux-Westerosi election.
The whole thing is meant to hype the release of the Game of Thrones Season 6 digital release, but when fans went to the website to vote, they noticed something interesting.
“Petyr Baelish…. with Sansa Stark.” Does this mean Sansa will be siding with Littlefinger in the wars to come? Or will she at least pretend to? Why isn’t she listed with Jon Snow?
Personally, I find some of the others are just as intriguing. Notice Cersei is “with Qyburn,” and not “with Jaime Lannister.” (Or for you those who want to marry her off, “with Euron.”)
And note that Jon Snow is “with Lyanna Mormont.” Jon Snow does need a wife, you guys. Might this be a match made in hilarity?
Or the marketing people who put up the website were just having fun. We only have 11 more months of speculation to go…
