HBO Commissions Song to Honor Jon Snow’s GoT Party Victory

You may remember that, throughout the month of August, HBO mounted a mock election between four “candidates” for the Iron Throne. With 35% of the vote, Jon Snow (with running mate Lyanna Mormont) edged out rivals Daenerys Targaryen and Tyrion Lannister (32%), Petyr Baelish and Sansa Stark (31%), and Cersei Lannister and Qyburn (2%—go figure). Now, HBO has commissioned a song to honor Jon Snow’s victory. Has it gone a bit too far with all of this? you decide. From the press release:

"In honor of Snow’s victory, one of Westeros’s hottest fictional bands, Valyrian Steel, recorded a new campaign song, called “Ode to Snow,” which in reality was co-written and recorded by Kyle Gass, John Konesky and John Spiker of the band Tenacious D. You can check out the song, which is debuting today, at this link."

Look, don’t get me wrong: the GoT Party elections were fun. They brought us some juicy speculative discussion, especially when we learned that Littlefinger chose Sansa as his running mate. The political commercials were hilarious, especially for those of us stuck in US battleground states. It’s hard to watch TV these days without seeing Trump’s face on at every commercial break.

But HBO has decided that just because the election is over doesn’t mean the subject is dropped. Way to rub it in the face of those Dany voters.

At least the song is somewhat period appropriate? Consider it something you can use as background music at *your* next GoT Party. If all goes well, it will celebrate the return of Season 7 in July of 2017, rather than an election.

Also, don’t forget that the point of the GoT Party election was to remind fans that they can download Game of Thrones: The Complete Sixth Season, available now on places like iTunes, Vudu, and Amazon Video.
