Featured Filming Maisie Williams Season 7

Season 7 filming: Maisie Williams still in Canada, and a report on the frigid Iceland shoot

We recently told you about Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams (Arya) visiting Canada to film scenes for season 7. According to a recent snap with a fan, it appears that she’s still there.

In fact, she’s not making much a secret of it, uploading multiple pictures to her Instagram account that have the unmistakable look of the Great White North. There’s even one of her in front of a giant maple leaf, the symbol on the country’s flag.

Warning: there will be SPOILERS from here on out.

Williams isn’t the only Game of Thrones star filming scenes in Canada. Instinct Animals for Film, a company that supplies Game of Thrones will wolf actors, uploaded pictures of a wolf named Quigly, who’s played Jon’s direwolf Ghost since season 5. Previously, scenes with Quigly have been filmed on a sound stage in Calgary, Canada.

Instinct Animals also uploaded a picture of a new wolf who looked an awful lot like a grown-up version of Arya’s long-lost direwolf Nymeria, last seen in season 1. That led to speculation that Arya and Nymeria would be reunited in season 7. However, after that news broke, Instinct for Animals locked its Instagram account. Odd that, eh?

Moving on (but keeping it cold), Page Six reports on the insanely cold temperatures that some of the Game of Thrones cast and crew had to endure while filming season 7 in Iceland in January. Actors like Kit Harington (Jon Snow) and Kristofer Hivju (Tormund Giantsbane) worked in 100 mph winds, which brought the temperatures down to 25 degrees below zero, Centigrade (13 degrees below zero, Fahrenheit)

Daylight is scarce here [five to six hours a day]. Super jeeps are needed to bring in equipment, and much is then transported by hand . . . The actors are made up and dressed in hotels and driven to location 90 percent ready to shoot . . . Shelter is provided by ‘Russian tents’ that are anchored down, and able to be heated, and [can] withstand 100 mph winds.

The high winds would occasionally “whip away” the dialogue, meaning there was a lot of shouting on set. And here I am complaining when it gets down to 40 degrees and I have to turn the heat up just a bit.

Speaking of Kristofer Hivju, here’s a video of him grunting into a mic for Fate of the Furious.

Huugh! ADR for The Fate of the Furious! You have soooo much to look forward to! Huugh! #fastandfurious

Maybe this warmed him up after all the frigid filming for Game of Thrones.

  • Nymeria to make a brief appearance and then disappear forever then, why would her wild Direwolf want to go back to being a pet? A quick sniff of Aryas hand and she’ll run back to her pack.

  • Why bring her back at all unless she plays a role? Direwolfs, we’ve been told are as expensive as dragons, but not nearly as impactful.

Chances are there will be some use for her.

  • Banff is near Calgary, and Calgary is where GoT shoots the direwolf scenes. And yes, Arya’s direwolf Nymeria, is still alive. Ghost and Nymeria are the only two still living.

  • I bet Nymeria comes back to jump on something from out of a bush, is barely seen, then gets killed… ”tis the fate of the direwolf…

  • So when Arya is on the verge of dying, she wargs herself into Nymeria and stays alive via a dire wolf? Maybr then Nymerya starts killing people after that

  • Could Maisie have been doing some other work for another role while she’s been in Canada? Isn’t she to become wolf-like for Marvel character? How about some test footage for that?

  • YESSS!!! That’s IT! Arya will die but she will Warg into Nymeria and then she’ll be the Faceless Direwolf!!!
    Look OUT Westeros!

    • What a dreadful idea–to replace a character loved by millions with an animal. Arya has much more to contribute; SHE is important to the endgame AND a Stark. and Maisieis an Emmy nominated actress . At least budget concerns will probably put paid to any temptation to do that to Arya.

    • I don’t think you’ve quite caught on to how much they underplay the Starks connection with their direwolves importance & thus the amount of screen time or lack there of, the direwolves have gotten. They also have severely downplayed the warging powers of the Stark children. Point being, Arya will not die & warg into Nymeria. She won’t be warging Nym at all is my prediction.

  • How did Ned know his sister was being held in The Tower of Joy in Dorne. Does George ever tell us or allude to that tiny tidbit?

    • Portions of this are speculation, but the general idea: The Tourney was in 181 AC, where Brandon was officially engaged to Catelyn, and he introduced his shy brother Ned to Ashara, where they danced. Both Meera and Jon were born in 183 AC, so if Ned and Lyanna are the parents, the timeline of the courtships were similar, just Ned’s sooner. The Daynes were loyal to the Targaryans, so Ashara being the mother of a Stark would be scandalous, and hidden. Of course the honorable Ned would clandestinely visit his secret hidden “stillborn” daughter if passing Starfall! Coincidently, Ashara most likely knew where Arthur was hiding Lyanna, and revealed it!

The unmarried Howland Reed became lifelong friends with the Starks at the tourney, where Lyanna heroically stepped in for his honor.
He would help Ned rescue Ashara!
Ned taking credit for killing Arthur works better if Howland smuggled Ashara and Meera to a much safer place, Greywater Watch!
This is how loosely picture those events.

  • GRRM once told in an interview that Nymeria and the wolves will have a important role to play in story. Maybe we’ll have a glimpse for that in the show (oddly there is only Nymeria and Ghost alive in the show, I’d bet everything on Summer playing this important role but maybe it’s Nymeria’s pack’s)
