Add one more Doctor Who-related event to the list of awesome announcements coming to San Diego Comic-Con 2015!
LEGO took to Twitter today to announce that Peter Capaldi will voice the Doctor in their upcoming cross-platform videogame, LEGO Dimensions. The news was paired with a new image of Capaldi holding a LEGO TARDIS minifigure from the game:

As you can see, LEGO is also teasing more information to be released at Comic-Con on Wednesday, July 8. The convention doesn’t officially start until Thursday, but July 8 is a “preview night,” with the Exhibit Hall open from 6:00-9:00 PM. Capaldi will join co-stars Jenna Coleman and Michelle Gomez, along with showrunner Steven Moffat at BBC America’s Official Doctor Who Panel the following day.

What is LEGO Dimensions, you ask? If you’re familiar with Skylanders, Disney Infinity, or Nintendo’s Amiibo, then you’re halfway there. LEGO Dimensions pairs an open world videogame with actual physical LEGO minifigures, which can then be “beamed” into the game via a NFC portal. Scanning new figures into the game will unlock new characters, abilities, and even new levels and worlds.
Doctor Who was rumored to be part of LEGO Dimensions back in April when a poor quality leaked box art image made the rounds online. It was all but confirmed a few weeks later when an instruction manual was accidentally posted on the LEGO website which teased upcoming LEGO Dimensions add-on packs, including Doctor Who. Finally, LEGO and the BBC made it official last month, announcing that Doctor Who would indeed be one of the included franchises.

The main appeal of LEGO Dimensions is the ability to cross characters from different famous franchises over into other game worlds. To wit, a number of licensed properties will be part of the game, including The Simpsons, Ghostbusters, Portal, Jurassic World, Midway Arcade, LEGO Chima, Scooby-Doo, The Lord of the Rings, The LEGO Movie, The Wizard of Oz, LEGO Ninjago, and Back to the Future.
No word on whether Capaldi himself will take part in whatever LEGO has planned for Wednesday, but curiously, their Twitter picture does appear to show him on an airplane — could he be headed to San Diego early? Hopefully, with or without Capaldi, we’ll get a host of new details on the game and possibly a new, longer trailer (possibly with some Doctor Who gameplay footage).
LEGO Dimensions is scheduled for release on September 29, 2015 for Xbox One, Xbox 360, Playstation 4, Playstation 3, and Nintendo Wii U.
