One of the ongoing fantasies for fans of both Doctor Who and Sherlock would be a crossover where both the Doctor and Sherlock Holmes would cross paths. It is a concept that seemed destined to be banished to the realms of fantasy and potentially horrid fan fiction, especially when it was stated that Holmes was a fictional character during ‘The Snowmen.’ So much for that dream, right?
Well, not necessarily. Robin Hood was stated as being a fictional character as well prior to his appearance in ‘The Robots of Sherwood.’ Given that precedent that a supposedly fictional character can be turned into a part of reality, the hope was that ‘Wholock,’ as it had been affectionately called, could actually happen.
There had been rumors perhaps Steven Moffat was considering such a crossover. He mentioned it as a possibility before, brushing off the concerns that such a crossover would not live up to expectations. After all, given the success and popularity of both programs, there would be quite the high standard.

Yesterday may have been the strongest indication that ‘Wholock’ could be a reality. In the question and answer Moffat made his thoughts on the matter truly known. After seeing that Batman and Scooby Doo could potentially team up with the Doctor, Moffat was asked if there were any other famous detectives whom he would want the Doctor to meet. Well, are there?
"“Talk to all the rest, I’m fine with it,” Moffat said. “My wife, [Mark] Gatiss, [Benedict] Cumberbatch, [Martin] Freeman — I’m fine with it. I’m the nice one. I say yes! It’s the rest of them!”"
At this time, there are not any indications that such a crossover between Doctor Who and Sherlock will occur. The principles of Doctor Who are at the San Diego Comic-Con, and will be finishing up filming Series Nine afterwards, while Sherlock is set to resume in 2016. However, if there is going to be a special crossover, it likely would not be filmed until the main action for both series are completed anyway.
At a time when new information and exciting tidbits will be coming out, Steven Moffat let the potential of a crossover between Doctor Who and Sherlock, one that fans of both shows have been dreaming of, come a step closer to reality. While there may not be anything in the works right now, that small sliver of hope has definitely increased with this statement.
