Breaking Down the Doctor Who Series Nine Trailer

Yesterday featured a moment that we had all been waiting for since it became apparent that the big announcements for Doctor Who would likely be made at the San Diego Comic Con: the official trailer and airing date for Series Nine were made available. Finally, we knew what moment to mark upon our calenders and to cancel any plans for that day.

And the Doctor Who trailer? For a 91 second clip, it certainly packed in a lot of information and teasers. While it is impossible to know everything that is going to happen from these brief glimpses into the upcoming season, that does not mean that various portions did not stand out.

While we already knew that the Doctor would be facing Daleks this season, especially with the rumored appearance of an adolescent Davros. Now, we know that the Doctor will not only be facing off against his long time nemesis, but will be dealing with a city of the genocidal pepper shakers.

More from Doctor Who

There was a brief glimpse of an orange space suit as well. Is this the typical orange space suit that the Doctor and his charges have worn previously in Doctor Who, or does this space suit signal something else? Could it be that, in Series Nine, there will be the long awaited return of the Vashta Nerada? Or is this something else entirely?

We had a glimpse of what appear to be new creatures for the Doctor to face off against. There are creatures that appear to have been humans at one point, or have possessed human bodies, turning their faces into what seem to be eyeless masks. With the hands reaching up from underground, it may well be that these are reanimated corpses, only without a cyber conversion.

There are glimpses of Missy as well. She is looking in her compact, with the red dot from a laser shining over her shoulder. Is she in some sort of danger from a sniper? Later in the trailer, Missy and Clara are standing together, a potentially interesting situation for the two, especially given the events at the end of the previous season of Doctor Who.

Even though the majority of the trailer was darker in nature, there were moments where the lighter Doctor that had been referenced surfaced. Who can forget the image of the Doctor playing guitar, standing there with his hand up in the air as though he just finished laying down one of the classic Slayer solos? A little later, we saw the Doctor putting on a pair of sunglasses, grinning roguishly.

And who can forget, at the very end, when the Doctor meets Maisie Williams’ character. He seems surprised, saying only “You” when she reveals herself. Does this mean that this mysterious character is, as some have already speculated in different forums, his granddaughter Susan regenerated? Or is this someone else entirely, who the Doctor has met in his previous travels?

For being only 91 seconds, there was quite a bit of action in the trailer for Series Nine. Yet, all it has done is merely whet our appetites, as we look forward to the upcoming series of Doctor Who.
